The next morning, I woke up to a silent an empty house. I did feel a bit bad about what I said about my mom to Benny.
I got changed and hopped Benny's fence and knocked on his bedroom window, which was right across from mine. He opened his curtains and I waved. He was already changed, so he nodded and headed to the front door.
I stood on his porch as he came out. "Hey," he said and smiled. "Hi," I said. "Hey, um, could you come with me to the hospital to see my mom..? I kinda don't wanna go alone, you know."
Benny nodded. "Of course. I really hope she's alright," he said and looked at me. I nodded and started to walk in the direction of the hospital.
We walked in silence, until Benny broke it. "So," he started. "I talked to the guys, and they really are sorry that they teased you so much." "Nah, I'm cool," I started. "It's not a big deal." He smiled. "Good," he said.
We reached the hospital and I started to talk to the lady behind a desk. I felt Benny grab my hand and I stopped in the middle of my sentence. "Well?" The lady snapped impatiently. "I don't have all day!" She yelled rudely. I told her that we were there to see my mom, and she snapped the room numbers and the directions. "Wow," Benny said. I nodded and scoffed.
We made our way to my moms room. I put my hand on the cold handle and pushed the door open. She lay there still. God, she looked horrible. She was covered in huge bruises and gashes from face to arm, which is all that I could see.
I walked closer, and Benny followed. I sighed, not knowing what to do. "I love you mom," I whispered. Benny put his hand on my shoulder, but I spun around fast and hugged him, sobbing.
I guess I really did feel bad about my mom, after all. He took a step back, but held me really close, softly stroking my hair. "K.. Katie.." I heard a faint voice say. I ripped out of Benny's hold and knelt by my mom. "Mom.." I said. She smiled a little. "I'll be okay.. They said I have minor cuts and bruises and a few fractured bones. It'll be hard for me to move for a few weeks, maybe a month, but I'll be okay. " She said in a stronger voice. I sighed, relived. I stood up. "I'll come every day and evening to see you," I said. She smiled. "I love you, mom," I said, still crying. She smiled again and fell asleep. Benny was just standing there with a smile on his face.
I hugged him again, and we walked back to my house. There was a red buggy outside. That meant only one thing- my aunt Carol is staying with me. She's so fun, only 28, so she's not an old boring woman.
I told Benny to wait outside and he nodded. I ran inside and saw Carol unpacking. We hugged and talked for a minute. "Hey, I'm gonna go out for a while, my friends waiting for me outside," I said. "Oooh, is this friend of yours a boy?" She said, fooling around. I rolled my eyes and laughed. "Yes," I said. "Well, he'd better be nice to my favorite AND ONLY niece, or I'm gonna have a few words with him," she said to me, laughing. I laughed and said bye as I walked outside.
