"Bye, Phil." Dan waved at me as I climbed onto the bus two days later. I waved back with a grin, fishing out my money, until I spotted a familiar someone following Dan. Tom. I asked the driver if he could wait, but he shook his head with a grumble. Cursing, I jumped off and ran down the street, keeping my eyes fixed on Tom's familiar messy head of dark brown hair and big build. And then I noticed his two bully friends Jack and Logan blending in with the pupils. As soon as Tom walked past them, they followed him, looking like the most un-suspicious people ever. I held back a bit, trying to find Dan, but I couldn't find him. Tom and his buddies turned a corner, so I decided to follow them. I knew Dan walked this way.

"There he is." Tom growled loudly, so when I turned the corner I knew what to expect: Jack and Logan rushing up behind Dan silently, like ninjas, about to take him by surprise. Terror consumed me. Before I could move, they grabbed his shoulders and forced him to the ground. He went down in a tumble of arms and legs and hair. I began to move forwards, fearing for my friend, but Tom saw me.

"Lester." He smirked. "How nice of you to join us. Would you like to see this scoundrel here get beat to death?"

My heart skipped a beat. I shook my head. "L-let him g-go." I stammered.

"Or what?" Tom laughed. "You'll kill me? I'd like to see you try. Show Danny some respect boys!"

My patience snapped and my terror disappeared. I lunged forwards just as Logan punched Dan in his ribs. I tackled Tom to the ground, feeling all of my hatred towards him pour into all of my punches. He wanted to hurt my best friend? Not. A. Chance. "I swear to god..." I breathed in his dazed face. "If you ever touch him again, I will kill you. Do you understand?"

I stood up and shot glares at Jack and Logan, who yanked Dan up and ran away. Cowards, I thought, before rushing over to Dan who was swaying unsteadily. I checked his face first for injuries: two little bruises on his forehead, easily covered by his fringe. Next, I pressed my hand to his side, which caused him to yelp in pain. I used two fingers to feel around the area to make sure it wasn't big, but I was pretty sure a rib was broken. Rage swelled up inside of me, but I had to push it away. Dan needed me.

As quick as I could, I dialled 999 on my phone. A woman's voice answered.

"I need an ambulance. My friend was beaten up in the streets and I think a rib is broken. We are just outside Weather High School."

"An ambulance is being sent to your location now. Hang on, keep the patient awake."

"I will." I hung up and propped Dan up against me. His head lolled to one side, his eyes half open. Not knowing what to do, I slapped his cheek, which really did wake him up. He groaned and weakly punched my side, but it was playful ol' Dan. I was glad he could do that at least. "It's going to be alright, Dan. You'll be fine. Look at me. Don't fall asleep."

His eyes shifted lazily to me. I could tell he was fighting to stay awake, but he fell forwards and I caught him before he could hit the floor and break his nose. Two minutes later, an ambulance came speeding past. I waved at them, signalling that the patient was with me, and two paramedics rushed out with a stretcher. They helped each other get Dan on, and then they placed him inside. Whilst everything happened, I rang my mum and told her I'd be going to the hospital with Dan. She told me to be safe, and I hung up, ready to climb in.

The ride was bumpy yet quick, and we were at the hospital in no time. I was shown to a waiting room, where I remained for two hours. My lunch was all gone, I had no drink and a 10p coin. Plus, I had nothing to do. Dan's bag sat next to me, and I remebered his camera. I pulled it out, hoping that it wasn't broken, and too my relief it wasn't. Curiosity getting the better of me, I looked on his gallery where most of his videos were. Most of them were in his room, but eventually I came across the one he had filmed in the park. I clicked play and watched it. It was exactly the same as when he had recorded it: the crying, the hug and my arm. As soon as it had finished, I turned the camera off and gently placed it back in his bag. It was a good time too, as a nurse was calling my name.

"Yes, here." I stood up and walked over to her. She was fairly tall with dark red hair and pale blue eyes, and she looked kind enough.

"You can go in now." She pointed down the hallway and then right. I walked in that direction, until I finally came across Dan's room. I looked through the window and saw him propped up against the pillows with his torso wrapped in a bandage. Other than that, he looked great... and bored.

I pushed through the door, dying to see him, and I tackled him with a hug. He winced in pain, and I loosened up a bit, but he managed to return it. "Are you better?" I asked, pulling away slowly.

Dan nodded. "Yes, thank you. A fractured rib, a couple of bruises, nothing more. I can go home tomorrow." The excitement in his voice was unmistakable. "You should come round to mine on the weekend and have a sleepover. Well, if you want to?"

"Of course." I replied with a giggle. "How long am I allowed to stay?"

"I don't really care, as long as it's for a while." Dan yawned. I knew he had been having more nightmares, but what could I do? Tell him to get more sleep? That would probably just make it worse. "Can I just sleep please? Five minutes?"

I laughed and then nodded. In less than ten seconds he was snoring softly. I leant my head on the pillow and closed my eyes too. Eventually I drifed into a long, peaceful sleep.
