That next day I was ready to sit down with Damon and tell him how I was ready to forgive him. I sat up almost all night thinking about it and making sure I was completely ready and not doing it impulsively.
I quickly realized that holding a grudge against Damon for this long wasn't worth it, especially since I knew I was still in love with him.
I knew I wasn't forgiving him just to know what has been going on with him and the last couple of days, I was doing it for me. I was doing it because not spending another minute him was slowly killing me deep down.
I woke up that morning with an agenda, and I was planning to see it through to the end.
I pushed myself out of bed that morning and immediately got into the shower. I didn't spend much time in there as I could hear Damon and Braxton conversing out in the hallway. I got dressed in plain jeans and a t-shirt before leaving my room and finding the boys downstairs.
It was a Sunday and Braxton was starting school tomorrow, he was growing up way too fast. I joined them in the kitchen as both of them had wide smiles on their face.
I was ready to get my conversation over with Damon as I wasn't sure exactly how it was going to go. Braxton ran into the living room and started to play with some toys so I decided to make my move.
"Damon can we talk outside?"
He nodded his head and I grabbed his hand, lacing my fingers with his. I lead him over to the hammock and we sat side by side with each other.
As we got situated next to each other, a strange silence looming between us Damon finally spoke up. "What is it you would like to talk to me about?" He questioned, folding his hands in his lap.
I took a deep breath before the words began to spill out of my mouth. "I forgive you Damon." Saying that felt like a weight was lifted off of my chest, but the surprised look on his face scared me.
"What?" He said confusingly as our eyes stared into each others.
"I realized it last night." I started. "After we kissed and I said I loved you I knew I forgave you right then and there. Holding a grudge just doesn't seem worth it anymore you know? I know you're never going to leave again. I can't imagine not spending another second not being with you. Life's too short."
A wide smile spread across his face as it did on mine. His hands reached out to my face, cupping my cheeks as he placed a passionate kiss onto my lips. Everything felt right in that moment, like the world stopped spinning for a moment.
He pulled away, pressing his forehead against mine as I whispered, "I love you Damon."
"And I love you." He whispered back, rubbing his thumb across my cheek.
"You know." He started as he smiled again. "The first time I asked you to be mine was in a hammock. How significant."
I smiled, "Whys that significant?" I questioned.
"Because Elena, I'm doing the same thing I did five years ago, asking you to be mine again."
I knew what my answer would be whenever he were to ask me again, and the word quickly left my lips. "Yes." I breathed out before placing my lips back onto his.
He pulled back again as he whispered against my lips. "Dinner tonight. You and me. Ill cook you the best steak you've ever had."
"I'm looking forward to it." I said smiling. "Should we go find our son?"
"We shall." He said before climbing out of the hammock, holding his hand out to help me out. I happily took it and regained my footing on the ground before we walked hand in hand back inside of the house.
