It all started in the CDC. There were smiles all around, everyone was happy and for once... everything seemed all right. Was it too good to be true? of course it was. But Y/n remembers pretending everything was fine, like the world was back to normal and these people she had met along the way were her friends.
She didn't really know how to refer to them.
It's not like any of them except those who were related, chose to be there, they were all forced towards each other in the weirdest life changing circumstances.
Maybe it was a sign that they met each other and had lasted as long as they had so far. Maybe she was destined to meet these people, to fit in somewhere.
Y/n felt this was her chance to prove what she had never been able to prove to her family. That she was strong. That she could be strong if given the chance.
She ironically laughed. Her family weren't around to see It anyway.
Y/n took a sip of the beer in her hand. She didn't even like beer but she wanted to get drunk, she needed to.
In fact everyone needed to. It would be good for them all to forget for a while. They had all taken ridiculously long hot showers and changed into fresh clothes, and they had just eaten a banquet of food that they wouldn't probably have or see for a long time ahead.
She could tell some of the others were drunk already, Glenn was so tipsy his laugh was louder than anyone else voice. It made Y/n smile, it was nice to hear true happiness.
Her eyes roamed around the room, flicking to everyone individually. Carol, Carl, Lori, Rick, Shane, Andrea. Until they landed on him.
Daryl.
He met her stare, a challenging look, before he smirked to himself, looking down at his bottle of whiskey before taking a long swig.
It was that moment. That exact moment that Y/n knew Daryl Dixon would be her weakness.
And by the end of the night it was a whole other story. Y/n knew the real him. The more vulnerable side, the side where he wasn't this angry red neck person that he initially portrayed under the influence of his brother. But he was a kind man who just wanted to survive.
He was fearless.
And in her drunken state she told him all of this. Only to receive a small smile and a tug to her hand.
Daryl was leading her to their rooms for the night, his lips on hers as he pushed her through the door to where he was staying.
"are we really doing this?" she asked breathlessly.
He nodded.
"only if ya want" he spoke, pulling away from her body to look at her.
"god yeah" she spoke, before he roughly pulled her into him, bodies crashing and lips colliding in a drunken mess.
It felt good to be this close to someone when she had no one. Even if she knew it would most likely be a one time thing.
Y/n needed the comfort and she found it in Daryl.

Every time she thinks back to that moment, where it all started, she cringes. Things could have gone so differently afterwards if only she had spoken to him when she had the chance. She wished she had woken up just 5 minutes earlier so she could but they were woken in a hurry by panicking voices outside their doors.
