It was a quiet day at the prison. I was leaning against the door to Beth's prison cell listening to her talking about how awesome it was that there hasn't been an accident in 28 days and that maybe we all might finally be on our way to an almost normal life. Whatever that meant. But then again I wasn't really listening, just picking up bits and pieces of what she was saying, occasionally nodding or mumbling a few words in agreement. I have to admit I was quite distracted, my whole attention focused on what was going on on the opposite side of the prison block. I was watching Daryl as he was chatting with Michonne. They were obviously joking with each other as their occasional laugh told me. It bothered me to see them standing only inches away from each other.

"Hey! Are you even listening to me!?" A soft punch against my arm snapped me out of my jealous thoughts.
"Yeah, sure. I...you...", I tried to remember what Beth just talked about, but she had caught me. I really wasn't listening at all.
"You're staring at him again, aren't you?!" She laughed at me teasingly. "Just toughen up and tell him already!"
"Are you out of your mind?! I'm definitely not going to do that. I mean, look at him, he's probably with Michonne anyway."
"Don't you think he would have told you if that was true?! You two are so close to each other. I bet you'd be the first to know."
"What if he doesn't want to hurt me, because he knows!? Oh god, what if he knows and they're joking about me?! Beth, what if!?"
"Yeah, sure.." She laughed at me. "You know it's Daryl you're talking 'bout, right?! And despite staring at him almost all the time you're pretty good at hiding your feelings. Maybe I should tell him."
"No, don't you dare do that." I was pretty much hissing the words and her eyes grew big for a second. Maybe that came out too sharp.
"Yeah, it's okay. God, I was just joking." She shrugged her shoulders. "It's your life after all. I'm not going to do anything. Would be better, but I'm not going to do it. Okay?!"
"Yes, thanks. I gotta go now."

From across the cell block Daryl was watching her out of the corner of his eyes. She looked gorgeous the way she was leaning against the cell door.
"Daryl, I'm still here, still talking to you though. Could you please snap back and give me an answer?!"
"Yeah, sorry." Daryl gave a small grin as an apology. "I was just..."
"I know. You were staring at her. You always do when you're not with her. It's as if the whole universe revolves around her. Then again, yours probably does." Michonne watched his reaction closely with a big smile on her face as she watched his face turn red. "I knew it!" She laughed out loud as he awkwardly averted his gaze. "You know what? I think she's watching you, too." Michonne said grinning and turned around to leave him standing there not sure what to make of that.
Was she really watching him too? And if so, why would she do that? Should he ask? Maybe someday. There were more important things to worry about now. Like going hunting for example.

I turned around as I heard my name being yelled from across the courtyard. Daryl was standing next to his bike waving, yelling for me to get my ass over to him. I obeyed and trotted across the court to come to a halt next to him. "What is it?"
"Hunting. Wanna come?"
"Yeah, sure, I'll just grab a bow. I don't want your sorry ass to be in danger without me!" I winked at him and ran back to quickly get my weapons. I heard him yelling something back along the lines of me being the one that needed protection.
I was back in under five minutes, but of course Daryl had put on a very annoyed face, dramatically looking at his wrist raising his eyebrows.
"Just shut up, I don't need you to comment on me being too slow right now!", I said punching his arm and planting myself behind him on his bike. We drove for a while until we reached what he thought to be a good place to go hunting for some rabbits or maybe even a deer.
We walked in silence so we wouldn't scare away our prey. It took about an hour before we saw a majestic deer grazing at a small clearing. With only hand signals we made a quick plan on how to get the deer. The plan worked smoothly and only a few minutes later we found ourselves standing above a good meal for the whole group.
"Nice shot, Pookie!", I grinned at him proud that we actually got a deer and not just rabbits and squirrels this time.
"Oh damn, ya too!? Carol told ya?!"
"Yep, she did... and quite a few other things too!" I looked up at him to watch his reaction. I was just teasing, Carol didn't tell me anything besides the wonderful nickname she came up with, but his reaction surprised me. Daryl was blushing. So there really was something she knew that I shouldn't!?
"What did she tell ya?!", Daryl asked eyeing me suspiciously.

Daryl looked at her curiously. He wasn't sure if Carol really told her anything, but he felt his cheeks turn red anyway. And by her reaction he could tell that she did notice. Carol wouldn't tell her, would she?!
"What did she tell ya?!"
He was trying to figure out what she was thinking, tried to figure out if she knew anything.
She finally took a deep breath and Daryl prepared to be told that she knew and he should stay away from her. But the only thing she did was sighing deeply. "She hasn't told me anything. I was teasing. But I wish she would have told me something, Daryl. I never know what you really think."
"'bout what?!" Confused by her answer, happy at the same time, he let his guard down for a second and reached out to her. With tingling fingertips he touched her arm gently. She looked so lost.
"About me..." She whispered. For a second Daryl thought she was leaning in to his touch, but he wasn't sure if maybe he was only imagining it. It couldn't be, could it?!

His hand was still resting on my arm. It felt warm against my skin and I couldn't help but lean in to his touch. His touch felt different from our normal random ones. It didn't feel random this time. It felt good. My heart beat faster as I spoke: "About me..." I was so afraid of the answer that I almost couldn't breathe.
The seconds between my question and his answer felt like years going by. When he finally cleared his throat to answer I felt like my heart was about to stop or jump out of my chest, both possibilities seemed pretty likely at this point.
"You're my best friend, you know that."
"Is that all?!" I felt tears dwelling up in my eyes. I didn't know what I expected, but his touch felt so different that I really thought there might be more to it. I was so naïve to think that I could be more to him. That he could feel the same way I felt.
"Isn't that enough?!" He watched me closely, a confused look on his face.
"I don't know. It always was. But..." Tears were starting to run down my cheeks.
Suddenly I felt a soft touch against my cheek. Gently brushing his thumb against my skin Daryl was wiping away my tears.
"Maybe there's more to it." His voice was merely a whisper. "You're more than that. There's something Michonne said today and I think she really was right about that." He looked up at the sky for a second before locking eyes with me again. I was too awe-struck at his words at first, but when he didn't start talking again, my curiosity got the best of me: "What did she say?!"
"She said that my universe revolves around you", he said. There was a little reluctance in his voice, but more than that it was nervousness I could hear. "Maybe she's right." A nervous smile crawled around the edge of his lips while he was still absentmindedly brushing my cheek.

Daryl got more and more nervous the longer it took her to respond to his confession. He wasn't sure what had finally driven him to confess to her. The words just came out without him thinking about it. Without him thinking about the consequences. Maybe it was her tears that finally brought him to tell her the truth, maybe it was her pleading voice when she told him that being friends wasn't enough anymore.
"Daryl!?"
He was suddenly taken back to reality by her soft voice. His heart started to beat faster when she carefully placed her hand upon his chest.
"I think about you every second of the day, I'm watching you whenever you're not next to me. You're my world. It's only fair that your universe revolves around me!" She laughed a sweet laugh before slowly getting up to her tiptoes. With a bright smile on his face he wrapped his arms around her waist carefully lifting her from the ground.
"Kiss me already!", she yelled laughing. She really hadn't have to ask twice. Daryl gladly complied to her request sealing her soft lips with his.
