Jasper
Car accident. Sadie had been in a car accident. They didn't say if she was de-, no, I couldn't think that word, not with her. Not her too. Blaine was enough; I couldn't bear to lose her, too; I know her parents wouldn't be able to handle losing her as well. She was all they had left.
"Where is she?" my voice cracked.
Her mother stood then, holding a hand out to me, helping me stand on my own two feet again. "Hospital. We just got the call."
Sadie was alive. She was alive. I could've had a heart attack with the amount of relief that rushed through me at those words. She was alive. But she was still in the hospital, not out of the woods. Was she in the woods in the first place? From their faces, I wasn't able to tell if her parents were in shock because of her being in an accident or the fact that both of their children had been in car accidents. One had died already; what was the fate of the other child.
"Want me to drive?" I forced calm into my voice; someone had to; they didn't need any stress added to their lives; I would help them through this. "I can take you guys there. It'd be no issue, I promise."
Her mother nodded, then reached a hand out for her husband. He took it without speaking.
I lead them out to my car, helping them into the back seat to hold each other on the drive over. Getting into the driver's seat, I had to take a few deep breaths before I could start the car. As much as I wanted to speed over to the hospital, I'm sure a speeding car was not what her parents needed to endure; they'd already been through too much. Going the speed limit would become my new normal; there'd been too many accidents, I didn't want to be in another.
Much too slowly, the hospital came into view. It had felt as if years had passed. I parked across the street and ran in with her parents on my heels. They'd broken free of their shock at the sight and sounds of the hospital. The nurse took us in with a sweep of her eyes. "Patient?"
"Sadie Newman! Sadie Jessica Newman!" I practically screamed. "She was in a car accident."
"Relation?"
"Boyfriend, Jasper Evans." I motioned at myself. "Her parents, Ant and Nora Newman."
The nurse nodded, typing something into her computer. "She seems to be in surgery at the moment."
"No!" her mother screamed. I turned in time to see her hit the floor, head in her hands. "Not my baby!"
Her father held her close. "It'll be okay, Nora! Sadie's a strong girl. She'll get through this."
"Ant, she's so little. A car acci-" she didn't finish her sentence. She didn't need to. Sadie was a small girl; it wouldn't take much to hurt her. She was strong enough to defend herself, fight for herself, but when it came to machinery? It was hard for anyone to fight that back and win.
"You guys can wait here." The nurse spoke, motioning for another to come around and help Nora off the ground. A wheelchair had been provided by a male nurse alone with a glass of water. Ant took both from him, helped his wife sit down, kneeling at her side, instructing her to take solid deep breaths. "We'll let you know of any changes in her status."
