now playing: why am I like this? by orla gartland
Yuki gripped the strap of her backpack as she stood tall and looked at the building in front of her. U.A high school: the best high school for hero training. Yuki gulped softly as she stared, she still couldn't fathom that she had been accepted. The day her letter came, she couldn't bring herself to open it. Yuki sat, alone, in her bedroom for hours just staring at it until she finally opened it.
It was her first day, and frankly, she was terrified.
There was a tight knot growing in her stomach as she continue to shuffle to the front door. Yuki brought her hands up to each other, rubbing them for warmth, before she started to fidget with her uniform sleeves. She was trying her best to fight off her nerves, but it felt as though she was watching a tsunami grow in front of her eyes. Yuki trusted the waters to not drown her but she could never predict the unpredictable. That was how her anxiety felt at that moment. That's how it felt all of the time. Yuki took a deep breath.
"U.A! I can't believe it! Can you Kiri?" A voice bursted in excitement from behind her. Yuki tensed up at the sudden cheer before turning around to see who it was.
A pink skinned girl was skipping in a circle around two boys, A huge grin glued to her lips. The boy on her left had electric-blond hair and a soft smile placed on his face. He watched the girl in awe. His eyes shined while watching the girl spin around and hold her arms to the sky. Yuki let her eyes drift to the taller boy with the trio. He had bright red hair but an eerily familiar smile.
"I honestly can't wait for class to start!" The red-head laughed and picked his head up from the ground. His eyes were quickly met with the small girl in front of him. She looked anxious, but held a soft smile on her lips from watching his friends interact. He gasped lightly as he walked faster toward her. "Yuki? Is that you?" kirishima exclaimed as he charged toward her. Yuki nodded softly. "I told you I'd see you again!"
Yuki widened her eyes as the boy wrapped his arms around her tightly. He chuckled deeply into her ear. Yuki tensed, awkwardly patted his back before softly pushing him off. Yuki took a step back as her cheeks reddened. "Hi, Kirishima."
"Who's this Kiri?" the girl asked as she and the other boy walked up to the pair. Kirishima turned his head slightly so the others were in his view.
"This is Fujimori Yuki! We're friends-- and she really saved my ass during the entrance exam!" Kirishima chuckled and turned back around to fully face the girl. She had the school's uniform on, everything buttoned and tailored to a T, down to how tucked in her shirt was and the shine on her shoes. Yuki had her hands hidden up into her sleeves as she brought her fingertips to the extra material again.
"Really? How so?" The other boy questioned lightly as he walked over to stand next to Kirishima.
Kirishima took his eyes off Yuki for a moment to recall the event from a few weeks ago, "She healed my sprained ankle and totally demolished a robot by herself!" He used his hands to talk. "One of those zero point ones!"
"No way! Really?" The girl beamed and pushed kirishima out of the way to get to Yuki. She grinned down at her and offered her hand. "That's so kind of you! My name is Ashido Mina."
Yuki shook her hand out of her sleeve and softly took Mina's hand. "It's nice to meet you."
Mina gasped and giggled to herself, "Oh my god, you're so cute!" She gushed and waved her hands. "Your voice is so pretty and you look so good!" Yuki blushed at the line of compliments. She gazed down at the ground. Mina turned to look at the boys. "She is so pretty!" She mouthed to them a second time. "Absolutely precious! isn't she Kiri? Kaminari?"
"Yeah?" The blond boy spoke up as he gazed at Yuki. Mina rolled her eyes before she nudged him with her elbow. "Oi! Sorry, I'm Kaminari Denki."
"Yuki. I prefer to be called by my given name." She hummed lightly and gave the boy a gentle smile. Mina giggled once again as she hit kirishima lightly on his forearm.
"What's with the hitting?" He reached over to rub his arm.
"Tell her she's pretty," Mina furrowed her eyebrows and watched the boy next to her glow red. Yuki smiled at his reaction. She thought it was funny how easily he could be flustered considering how much he put into his manly persona.
"He doesn't have to." Yuki scratched the back of her neck. "And plus we have to... to get to class." She nodded while looking at the boy next to her. He quickly nodded back.
"Yeah," he pulled his lips into a straight line. "Class, right."
Mina frowned as she twisted away from Kirishima, whose face was currently putting his hair to shame. "Awe, do we have to?"
"Yes." kirishima huffed out of embarrassment and began to walk toward the front doors of U.A. "Come on, little one."
"Little one?" Mina yelled as she attempted to rush after them.
"Shut up!" Kirishima groaned.
Yuki quickly hurried after him, who then held the door open for her. "I'm sorry about her," he whispered so only Yuki could hear him. "She really doesn't have a filter."
"It's alright." Yuki breathed back to him as the pair shuffled down the carpeted halls of the school. "At least it's a memorable first impression."
Kirishima chuckled deeply, "That's one way to look at it."
Yuki bounced up on her toes to be able to knock shoulders with the taller one. "I like your hair." Kirishima reached up and touched some of the ends. "And here I thought I was going to be friends with the emo boy."
"Emo?" He scoffed. "Oh, if anything-- I was scene."
"Oh, really? I don't really know the difference."
"Totally. It's all in the music." They rounded a corner. "I wanted a fresh start." Kirishima reached up and lightly touched his gelled up hair again before scratching the back of his neck. "But thanks," he chuckled as kept his eyes to the ground. "Come on, let's get to class."
"I'm scared." Yuki crossed her arms over her chest.
Kirishima nodded. "Me too."
"Really? You don't show it."
Kirishima slowed his steps to match Yuki's pace. "Yeah, I'm terrified. But hey, I think we'll do just fine." He smiled. "Plus, maybe you'll get to see that one kid."
Yuki furrowed her brows. "Kid... Who?"
"You know, that boy..."Kirishima hunched his shoulders and hardened his eyes. "ugh-- you extras!" He mocked. "You know, the one with the eyes."
"Oh, him?" Yuki held back a laugh. "Yeah, I might see him. What about it?"
Kirishima shook his head. "'What about him?' Come on now, little one." They rounded another corner, their classroom coming into view. "You've got your eyes on that one, for sure."
