I squinted and let my eyes adjust to the lighting of the room. Sunlight came in through the window and lit up the room. Judging by the lighting, it was probably around noon. I started to get up, but there was something holding me down. I looked to see a sleeping Darrel snuggled up against me. His head was right next to mine, resting on my arm. He had his arms wrapped around me, and his legs were overlapping mine at the ankles. I blushed a little and smiled at him. I took a few minutes to enjoy this moment.
I then inched out of bed, careful not to wake him. I got up and walked into the kitchen. The first thing I saw was Soda, sitting in Darry's armchair. He looked up at me and smiled.
"Morning, Dal," Soda said.
I glared at him, and he looked down guiltily. I looked around the room, and no one else was there.
"Where's your posse of friends, hmm?" I asked coldly. Soda sighed and replied.
"I decided to stay home." Soda mumbled. That caught me me surprise. Soda never did anything without Steve, and Steve never did anything without Soda. They were practically inseparable. Why would Soda choose to stay home?
I sighed angrily and replied, "What's in it for you, huh?" Soda looked up at me, hurt. I know I had gone too far, and I should stop. But I was on a roll. "What caused this sudden change in heart?"
Soda looked back down and started blinking back tears. I didn't stop.
"What? Hmm? Why start caring now instead of then? You walked out on him when he needed you most and now you're back!" I was shouting now. "Why, Soda?! Why would you-"
"Because he's my brother!" Soda stood up. "Because I care for him!" His eyes were bloodshot and he was crying big ugly tears that traced his jawline.
"Soda, I-"
"No, Dally!" He shouted at me, "You have to listen to me now!" The tears kept coming. I remained silent, dumfounded by his sudden anger. "Darry is my brother, and I love him and care for him!"
"Soda, please, I didn't mean it-"
"I don't want your empty apology!" Soda yelled.
Darry walked into the room, rubbing his eyes. "What the heck...?"
Soda ignored Darry and continued, "How would you know anything about love?!" That hurt.
"You're snarky, ruthless, and bitter!" Please stop.
"How could you ever understand?!" Soda shouted, eyes lit up with rage, "You don't know love!"
I could feel the tears welling up in my eyes. There was a lump in my throat. I had done enough damage already. I looked at Darry, who was nervous and confused. I gave him a soft smile, and I turned to face Soda. I swallowed and spoke my final blow.
"You'd be surprised," I choked. I then turned around and walked out of the Curtis house, which had gone silent once again.
Ayy, sorry that chapter was kinda short! I hope you're enjoying the fic so far!
