I watched Darry as he looked around the theatre uncomfortably. People were giving us a real hard time, but most were just watching the movie without any thought to us, as if we weren't worth paying attention to. It's not like I want trouble, but it still pissed me off. I kept my head screwed on straight, because I'd rather not get my lights punched out. So I tried to focus on the movie.

We were hanging out by the concessions stand, off to the side so people wouldn't notice us. We still had a pretty decent view of the movie, and the guy working the stand right now is okay with doing business with us when no one else is around. The movie was pretty good, and I was kind of into it, but I kept looking at the extremely bored Darrel at my side. He was trying to act like he was enjoying it, but he was clearly bored out of his mind. At this point, maybe I really do need help, because I'm starting to find his boredom attractive on top of everything else.

Darry eventually decided to go out with me. Not as a date or anything, we both just figured it would be good to get out of the house. We hadn't really been cooped up that long, but we aren't really the kind that can tolerate being indoors for an eternity at a time. So here we are.

I glanced around to make sure no one was watching. Without drawing any attention to myself, I looped my arm around him and pulled him close. He relaxed a little, leaning against me. Although he was trying to act tough, he seemed really tense. I let out a sigh.

"You wanna head home, man?" I asked, careful not to sound impatient. Darry looked back at me and gave a subtle nod.

"C'mon," I said. I made my way to the back fence, Darry close behind me. I climbed the fence and jumped down the other side. I looked over my shoulder and saw Darry climbing up the fence and then falling to the ground with a thump.

I snickered and helped him up. He steadied himself and checked his watch.

"It's almost ten thirty, we should be heading back," He said, startled at how late it was.

"Yeah," I agreed. He probably wanted to get home to Ponyboy and Sodapop, who were probably wondering where he was.

We walked down the sidewalk in total silence. The only sound was the rumble of passing cars and some big party a little ways away. It was a clear night, you could look up and see a whole assortment of stars that you would never see in the city. The streetlights buzzed and flickered, concealing the stars and illuminating the streets with a weak light. It was quiet. Peaceful, even. Just me and Darry.

As we passed the vacant lot, Darry opened his mouth to speak, then hesitated.

"What is it, Dar?" I asked, curious to find out what he had to say.

"Nothing, it's stupid," He mumbled, kicking a rock into the street.

"Just tell me what it is," I persisted.

Darry answered with a simple request.

"Is it alright if we stop and sit in the lot for just a bit?" He asked quietly. I nodded and we walked into the lot.

We stopped and sat in an abandoned mustang, with the sides rusting up and weeds starting to grow up the tires. Probably from some Soc who thought it wasn't good enough. Well, one man's trash is another man's treasure.

I made myself comfortable on the worn leather of the backseat, Darry doing the same beside me. I watched him as he hugged his knees and looked up at the starry sky, mesmerized by all of the little white dots. I watched him as he slowly forgot about the world outside. He relaxed into the backseat, contently gazing up at the night sky. A warm feeling spread inside me and I smiled at him. We sat there for a while, and I broke the silence.

"You like the stars?" I asked him. Darry snapped back to reality and answered.

"Yeah. Yeah I do," He replied, then looked back up at the sky and spaced out again.

He looked over at me, and quickly looked away when he saw me looking at him. I smirked and pulled him closer. He tensed up awkwardly, and suddenly became very interested in the cracked leather of the driver's seat. I continued trying to start conversation.

"Do you like the stars how Pony likes sunsets?" I ask curiously.

Darry nodded. "Yeah. I'll always do this after a long day of work, after Pony and Soda fall asleep." He looked back up at the sky. "I could never do this around anyone else though."

"Why not, man?"

He sighed and looked at me. "I don't know," he started, "It's just that, no one seems to want another dreamer," He said, "People depend on me acting tough all the time, so I give 'em what they want." He looked at me, giving me those blue eyes. "You know?"

I yawned. "Yeah. Yeah I do," I said. Darry finally relaxed, leaning against me. I looked at the tired boy beside me and smiled.

"But for all it's worth," I yawned again, "I think you're perfect."

Darry looked at me with those gentle blue eyes, which everyone else perceived as cold and harsh. His cheeks went a little red, but instead of looking away, he smiled. One of those perfect, precious smiles you can never capture in a picture.

"You think so?" There was a spark in his eyes, and he smiled a little bigger.

I felt a smile creep onto my own face. I felt my cheeks get hot, and butterflies were attacking my stomach. I nodded, and Darry looked down, trying to hide that beautiful grin of his. I leaned in and pressed my lips against his. I wrapped my arms around his waist and pulled him close. He kissed me back, grabbing my neck and deepening the kiss.

There we were, kissing in the backseat of an abandoned mustang. We pulled away, and just sat there awkwardly, not knowing what to do next. Darry fiddled with his shoelaces, smiling at the torn leather. I ran my hand through his greasy hair, leaving it sticking up in little spikes. Darry rolled his eyes at me and flattened out his hair. I snickered.

"I love you, Starboy," I said.

Darry looked at me and raised an eyebrow. "Starboy?"

I gave him a cocky grin. "Yeah. It suits you."

Darry laughed laughed a little and glanced at his watch. His eyes widened and he sat up.

"I've gotta get home, Pony and Soda will be wondering where I am," he said frantically. I sat up and jumped out of the car, cutting Darry off. I then smiled at him and held out a hand all gentleman like. Darry scoffed and smacked my hand away. He then jumped out of the car, landing beside me.

"I ain't one of your broads," He said all tough. I laughed and grabbed his hand.

"No," I said, "No you ain't, man."

We walked down the cold streets, laughing and joking around the entire way back to the Curtis house.

I turned to look at the snarky boy beside me. I looked at his messy, greasy hair and his blue eyes.

He sure ain't any old broad.

He's something else.

And I'm determined to treat him right.
