I startled awake to the sound of a pan hitting the ground.
"I do not!" Darry yelled, and I could sense the embarrassment in his tone of voice.
I looked up at the scene. Soda and Pony were following Darry around, laughing their butts off while doing so. Johnny was just sitting on the armchair watching, grinning wildly in an attempt not to laugh. Darry's face was red, and he made several attempts to walk away. And every attempt was stopped by his two little brothers.
"Yes you do!" Soda teased, jumping in front of Darry, forcing him to make eye contact. Darry groaned and turned to walk in the other direction, but was confronted by Ponyboy, who stood in his way.
"Ponyboy, move," Darry ordered. He tried to jump around Pony, but the smaller one stopped him.
"Admit it, Darry!" Pony giggled, looking up at his older brother, who then immediately looked up at the ceiling, trying desperately to avoid the subject at hand.
As amusing as this was, Darry obviously wasn't having the greatest time. I watched him as his brothers continued to nag him. He eventually escaped, only to continue to be cornered by his younger brothers.
I laughed. "Hey, leave poor Darry alone, man."
Darry looked at me and gave me a nervous smile. Pony and Soda whirled around to look at me.
You know those sibling moments where you think the same thing at the same time? Pony and Soda had one of those moments. They looked at each other and grinned. Darry seemed to get the message too. He panicked a little and ran at his younger brothers.
In unison, Pony and Soda yelled, "Darry-!" Darry clamped his hands over their mouths, preventing them from speaking. Darry clearly didn't want me to know, but I had a feeling I already did.
"Don't even think about it," Darry growled. He then shot me a quick smile and shoved the duo away. He then turned to look at all three of the kids. "Why don't you guys go out for breakfast while I clean up the kitchen?" He suggested.
Pony and Johnny nodded and gave me mischievous grins. I raised an eyebrow at them, and they snickered and ran out the door. Soda followed close behind, and soon, they were out the door.
What a bunch of idiots, I thought to myself. I looked at Darry, who held his head in his hands and sighed.
"Morning, Dal," He said. He walked on over and sat down on the couch next to me. "How're you feeling?"
I smiled at him. "I'm feeling better," I replied. I ran my fingers through his hair, which was the same as it had been last night. Darry looked at me awkwardly and smiled. Just seeing him smile made me happy. It wasn't fake or weird. It was subtle, and perfect, and real. I felt the blood rush to my face again, and my heart started racing.
He cleared his throat. "Are you hungry?" He hesitated, "I could fix you something if you want." He sat there anxiously, his hair falling in his face. Impulsively, I reached over and tucked his hair behind his ears. I could feel my heart beating, and the butterflies returned. Darry tensed and looked at me, then rolled his eyes and swatted my hand away.
"Stop that," He said. He stood up and walked away. I followed him and jumped in front of him like Soda and Ponyboy had, and I gave him a cocky grin. Darry chuckled.
"Not you, too," He said sarcastically. I laughed, and I kept annoying him. I wrapped on arm around his waist and the other around his upper thighs.
"Dal, what're you doing-" He asked suspiciously. I then picked him up and held him up by his legs. He wasn't light, let's be clear on that. He looked at me, clearly annoyed.
"Dal, put me down," he barked. I gave him a sly grin. I pretended to drop him, loosening my grip for just a moment. However, Mission Make Darrel's Life Harder By Excessive Flirting panned out differently than I expected. Darry panicked in midair, and wrapped his arms and legs around me, causing us both to fall.
He kept himself latched onto me for a minute, and immediately released his grip. He looked up at me, trying his hardest not to smile. I grinned at him, and his cheeks reddened. I got off of him and helped him up. I pulled him close, wrapping my arm around his waist. I grabbed his chin with my other hand and smiled at him.
"You know you like me," I teased. Darry blushed and smiled at me.
"Maybe I do, maybe I don't. Let me go so we can never bring his up again," Darry said matter-of-factly.
I gave him a gentle peck on the cheek. Darry looked at me, surprised. I released his chin and set my hand on his waist. Darry smiled at the ground.
"I still don't like you."
I pulled him even closer. I wanted to test something. I stuck my leg in between his, and gave his a sly grin. Darry looked up at me. He leaned in. My heart started racing, and I could barely feel my face.
All of a sudden, I was kissing someone's scarred palm. Darry grabbed me by the shoulders and kneed me in the crotch. I doubled over from the pain, and I looked up at the man who had betrayed me.
"What was that for?!" I pleaded.
Darry smirked. "Know your boundaries, Winston." He knelt down in front of me, and this time he grabbed my chin, just as I had done several times to him. "Did you really think it was going to be that easy?"
I told him the truth. "I... I kinda did," I replied innocently.
Darry released my chin and laughed. He then got up and walked off. "I'm gonna go get a decent shirt on, be right back."
God, I love him so much.
