"Montag Morgasson!" Morga's voice can be heard all over the grounds. The young boy flinches, drops the berries and tries to slip away but she's already got ahold of his hem. "What did I tell you?" She asks demandingly and the blond stares at the ground with a frown. "Train." He mumbles and the woman glares at him harshly. "So tell me, what were you doing?" He looks annoyed and crosses his arms. "Eating berries." She sighs and shakes her head. "Y/N!" She yells my name and I immediately run over to her. "Yes!" I yell back and she nods at her son. "Train with him. He needs to be kept an eye on." She sais and let's go of Lucio, patting my shoulder and leaving towards her tent. I turn to the boy, looking at him expectantly. "What?" He furrows his brows and I point to his empty hands. "Where's your weapon?" I ask him confused, since everyone carries some sort of weapon with them. Even children from the age 6 and up are already taught how to use them. And he is around the age of 10, 2 years older than me. He shrugs, turning back to the bush to pluck off another berry. "Don't know. Must have left it in my tent." He sais, carefree as we stand in the middle of the forest.
-10 years later-
"Lucio!" I yell, walking around the camp grounds trying to find him. Where has he run off to again? I sigh, walking towards the forest in annoyance. He must be eating berries again. But as I reach the bushes he's not at his usual hang out, which starts to worry me a bit. He's an adult, he should be able to take care of himself.. I try to tell myself, but knowing his carelessness and way too high ego he could just die for not paying attention or being a jerk could also get him killed. I shake my head at those thoughts and decide to walk further into the forest, my hand tightly clasping around the handle of my sword. Just as I'm about to turn around and head back I hear faint yells in the distance. "What did he get himself into now?" I ask myself as I run after the source of noise until I reach a cave. I stop, immediately ducking behind a tree as I see the big animal at the entrance of it. Lucio's taunting voice echoes throughout the cave, trying to annoy the bear, who's clawing at the entrance hence to him being too big to enter. Honestly, did he even know how stupid that was? Angering such a wild beast was the stupidest thing I could ever think of. I sigh as I think of ways to get him out of the situation, but knowing there's no other possible solution I ready myself to attack. I take one last deep breath before stepping out of my hiding spot and yell at the bear. "Hey!" It immediately turns around and it's angry expression is now pointed at me. Lucio's shouts stop and I shake my head before running towards the animal. It snorts in anger and dashes towards me but I dodge its attack and slice at its side. It whines and turns yet again to strike at me. I huff as I barely dodge it this time, but successfully cut a big chunk of its flesh out with a smooth swish of my sword. It let's out a deep growl, tumbling to the side before steadying itself. I smirk, a bit proud of myself for standing my ground. I briefly look towards the cave where I spot a tuff of blond hair and Lucio's worried expression. Wait, he's worried about m- But my thoughts are cut off as the bear's claws sink into my shoulder, making me cry out in pain. I hiss, blood seeping through my top and with a quick motion I tumble back, ripping it's claws out of my flesh, a few chunks flying everywhere. My vision goes blurry for a second, but I'm brought back to my senses as I hear Lucio yell my name. "Y/N! Watch out!" His voice is drenched with worry and as I refocus I see his with horror filled expression before I focus back onto the beast. I try to bear with the pain, which is almost impossible but I pull through somehow. I see the bear run towards me, it's mouth wide open, bearing its razor sharp teeth at me and with the last bit of strength I have left I saise my sword, plunging it right through the open mouth of the animal, making it fall on top of me. I feel the sudden weight on me and just before I black out I see Lucio run towards me. Just for a second I swear I see tears in his eyes, then everything turns black....
I slowly start to blink, feeling a sharp pain go through my shoulder as I move and I wince. I try to get up but I'm pushed down by someone and I finally open my eyes. Next to me stands no other than Morga, a stern look on her face. I groan, trying to ask her what's happened but before I can she speaks up. "You need to collect your strength so you heal faster. To answer you questions, you've been asleep for 4 days. Foolish boy came running onto the grounds yelling helplessly. We found you next to the musk bear. I have no clue how you managed to survive with such a fatal wound." She motions towards my shoulder and continues. "My son was in such shock that he didn't tell anyone what had happened." I furrow my brows and before I know it I start telling her what didn't happen. "Montag, he.. He saved me." I say with a raspy and tired voice. I have never seen this woman raise her eyebrows before, but her harsh eyes soften just a little at my words. "He.." She mumbles, at a loss for words. "And I thought he was a foolish coward, not able to fend for himself." For a moment she bears a painful look, but before the uncomfortable silence can drag out any longer the curtains to the tent are flung aside and none other than Lucio stands in the entrance. As soon as their eyes meet her expression turns back to her usual one and he flinched a little. But as soon as his gaze falls upon me his eyes widen and he hurries over to my side. "Y/N!" He holds my hand and I give him a weak smile. Morga clears her throat and he looks up at her. "Y/N told me what happened." She begins and I can see him get nervous. He's about to prepare for another scolding but instead she places a firm grip on his shoulder and looks him deep in the eyes. "I never thought I'd say this, but you did well. I see I haven't failed us." She sais and he looks at her, but before he can ask I elbow him slightly and he gets the hint. "T-thank you, mother." He sais and she nods at us before she leaves the tent. As soon as she's gone he let's out a breath and I chuckle, but immediately regret it as the pain in my shoulder reminds me of my current prediction. "Shit, are you ok? I immediately got the best healer in the region to treat you." He sais and I blink, confused. "Lucio, why would you.." I trail off and he looks away and I swear I see his cheeks flush a bit. "What does it matter? I just didn't want my friend to die.. Especially if it's because of me. I'd feel.. bad." He tells me and I can't help but smile. I'm laying here, part of my shoulder missing because of this idiot in front of me.. But I can't blame him. I did it because... Because? Why? I think about what made me jump in while staring at his face. But my thoughts soon drift off to somewhere else, like his jawline, his cheekbones, his eyes and his lips. I can't deny that he's handsome, every girl in the tribe talks about him. But I never stopped to think about it until now. We are friends, I never had such thoughts before. "Y/N?" I hear him call my name and I shake my head with flushed cheeks. "I can't believe you'd do that.." He sais, talking about my almost self sacrifice. I'm about to shrug, but stop myself quickly. "You almost died! I mean I do like loyalty, but that was taking it too far." He exclaims while wildly gesturing with his hands. I smile at his antics and stare at the far end of the room. "Hey." I suddenly start, making him look at me expectantly. "I.. Think I like you." I tell him what's on my mind. He furrows his brows, a blush slowly but surely spreading all over his face. "W-what? Did you hit your head?! The fight definitely messed you up. I should probably get a healer." He gets up, acting hectic out of embarrassment. But as he gets up I grab him by the hem of his shirt and pull him down towards me with my good arm. I lean in and catch his lips with mine. At first he let's out a surprised yelp, but in no time he melts into the kiss, his hand caressing my cheek. I want the moment to last, but the pain in my shoulder ends it abruptly as I lean back against the bed, gritting my teeth. Lucio quickly snaps out of it and starts to worry. "Y/N, I didn't want to tell you this but.. You might loose your left arm.." He tells me and I glance down at it. The sight is a disaster. The wound is bandaged, but anyone can tell that a huge part of it is missing. I probably, no definitely can't move it anymore. I sigh, closing my eyes to gather my thoughts. I look up at the blond next to me and give him a weak smile. "Well, let's hope I'll get a nicer one instead." He laughs. "I owe you one. So next time let me protect you. Who knows, maybe we'll be able to get matching arms." I laugh, throwing my head back. "Wow what a strange thing to say." We both chuckle, looking at each other contently. Lucio stays with me throughout the whole day, making sure I'm OK. And as night falls, although he's already fast asleep he's still at my side, holding my hand reassuringly. I smile up at his sleeping face one last time before closing my eyes and starting to drift off.
