Dad had arrived at the airport, and I was on my way to pick him up. He was going to be spending the weekend. I hoped he hadn't brought Nina with him.
I tightened my grip on the steering wheel just thinking about her. It was dark, and I couldn't see a thing. All I could see was blurred lights. I needed my glasses. I brought out the case, and put on my thick framed Ray Ban glasses.
I finally got to the airport, and waited for dad to show up. I spotted Nina walk with much ceremony. Dad's shoulders were draped around her back. That was supposed to be my mum. Ugh, I hated this woman!
Dad walked up to me, and Nina stood behind him.
"Dad. You're here," I smiled, and he hugged me. Where was all the warmth and love? Nowhere.
"Ah. Tyler. It's been long," he said, smiling wistfully at me, like a proud father. He really needed to drop the act. There was no need for pretending. We all knew the situation between us.
"Yes, daddy."
"Hello, Tyler," Nina smiled, and left a kiss on my cheek.
"Hi," I said, bored.
We got their luggage, and I led them to my car.
"Cool car," Nina fawned. She was doing it for daddy.
"Yeah." Dad stayed in the front seat and Nina at the back. Thank God, I wouldn't see her face. She was actually pretty. With the black shoulder length hair, and the pretty face. But my mother was more beautiful, I assured myself. Her Long black hair and hazel eyes. Mum was young too. So I didn't see why dad grew disinterested in her.
"Dad, what is it you want to tell me?" I wisphered to him, hoping he'd catch on, and talk lowly. I was behaving like a brat.
"Now's not the right time. Tomorrow," he yawned. I could tell he was tired, and worried.
When we got home, the house way unusually clean. The small mahogany dining table - which was barely used - was set, with a variety of food on it. I licked my lips.
Dad looked around. "This is the house you're mother is paying rent for?"
"No. Nina and I got it together," I clenched my jaws tight.
"Reena. Come out! We have guests!" I yelled.
Reena answered, walling prettily into the room. She was wearing a short floral print dress and fancy flip flops. She was in comfortable sweatpants earlier. She always aimed to please.
"Hello Mr. and Mrs. Reese." She said politely, smiling widely at them.
I cleared my throat. "Mr. Reese and Nina." I corrected.
Nina smiled awkwardly. And Serena gave me a look, signalling to me to stop. I ignored her and said, instead.
"What? It's true," I said.
"Why don't I take you to your room, Nina?" Serena ushered Nina away.
I plopped on the couch, rubbing my temples. Today was messed up. I was so tensed, and unrelaxed.
We ate dinner in silence. Well, they ate, while I devoured the food. When did Serena get so good? Nina attempted a few times, to begin a conversation, but I did or said something that made her quiet.
