Chapter Three

Reena pulled up in the parking lot, and I could hear a sigh of relief escape May's lips. She was driving like a lunatic, because a car had been trailing behind us the whole time. Reena got freaked out by anything suspicious. I knew that it was something that couldn't be ignored, but she had to relax.

We went up to our apartment through the elevator. I inserted the key in the lock and pushed the door open. Everything looked the same.

"I'm starving," I groaned. "How about you get your butt in the kitchen and whip something up for us, Reena."

"You wish. I'm ordering pizza."

My phone vibrated under me. I dug into my shorts pockets for it. Dad? I wonder what he was calling for.

My dad and I hadn't talked in three months. I was counting, and I was just too stubborn to give him a call, ever since he and my mother were through with the divorce. That was the reason why I moved out of the house. Dad's stupid girlfriend, Nina, was always there. I had an unusual disliking for her. I mean, she was the bitch who snatched my dad away. The reason for my unhappiness.

Dad was back in California, and mother moved to India. I was currently in New York. We were all scattered across the world, like the broken family that we were.

"Hello," I said with no emotion. I knew I shouldn't be hard on him, but I couldn't control myself.

"How are you, Tyler?" He asked. He didn't sound worried, at least. We never had a father-daughter relationship. He was always working trying to secure my future, as he always said. A company and riches wasn't what I wanted, but I didn't mind anymore.

He sent cash, and anything I asked for. So did mother. It was as if they were having a competition, or something. I laughed humorlessly, at the thought.

"I'm alright. I'm coming from the hospital," I informed him.

"Yes. Your friend called me, and said you were not feeling well," he said coolly. The calmness of his voice was irritating.

"Why is it you're calling me?" I asked, getting straight to the point.

"Look, Tyler. This is a serious issue. We need to talk, but not on the phone. I'll come over in two days. I'll arrange for us to meet somewhere," he said, specifically using his business tone.

"Okay."

"Goodbye," he said and I ended the call.

"Was that your dad?" May asked.

"Yeah. Finally, he called. Some important thing he wants to talk about. He's coming to New York," I said.

"You know, I called him and said you were sick-ish," Reena said. I suddenly felt like shit.

"He doesn't give a damn about me. That'll never change," I said, angrily. What kind of a father did I have?

"Its okay, Ty. There's  some chocolate cake in the fridge, if that'll cheer you up," she grinned widely. I grinned too. I loved cake.

May, Reena and I decided to watch movies throughout the night.

I opened the fridge, and retrieved a soda. Reena was still popping the popcorn, and May was making turkey sandwiches. I grabbed one from the plate and stuffed it into my mouth.

May slapped my hand away playfully, when I was about to reach for another one.

"What? I'm hungry," I whined.

"Popcorn's ready," Reena announced.

I snuggled under my duvet, on the bed. May put in the movie, and turned off all the lights in Reena's room, then pulled the other end around her.

"No screaming," Reena who was in between us reminded, when the title of the movie appeared on the screen, accompanied by eerie music.

I picked up a handful of popcorn and crammed it into my mouth. "I figure," I mumbled, as I chewed, "if I keep my mouth full, I won't be able to scream."

After our all-night movie fest, we slept late in the morning. My alarm went off.

"No," Reena groaned.

May crept up behind the bed and shook us awake. I obediently sat up and stretched, but Reena buried her head into her pillow and pleaded to be left alone.

"Okay, Reena. Sleep all you want, I don't care anymore." She turned to me, "Bye, Ty. Last night was fun. I need to go out now. I'll be late for my class."

"Later," I said sleepily. May was in college, in her second to the last year. She was also a part-time model.

She hurried out of the room.

I took the popcorn bowl and the empty cans of soda into the kitchen. And washed the dirty dishes.

I need to go shopping. We're all out of groceries.
