Miss Wilmot sat across from me at the dinner table. She and my mom are talking about the restaurants. They each own a restaurant in town, they get more business than anyone I know. Miss Wilmot owns a small Italian place. She makes the greatest chicken Alfredo.

My dad is listening intently to their chatter while sipping on his wine, he's always been one to listen but barely ever adds input on what they are talking about.

Kohen, my best friend, and Miss Wilmot's son, is sitting next to me texting his girlfriend. We just got back from a weekend of camping with no reception and he almost died from not being able to talk with Norah for two days.

The twins are each in high chairs playing with their food.

Dinner with the Wilmot's is always a big event, even though dinner with them always happens on Sundays and at least two other days in the week.

My Mom loves having people over, she's the most social woman ever. And loud. Very loud.

We've already finished the food but there's always dessert so I'm just waiting for that.

Kohen leans over to whisper to me, "Norah says something is going on at Teddy's place, wanna check it out?"

I nod, I'm not one to pass up a party. Neither is Kohen.

Mom gets up telling everyone she's getting desert. Once she's out of the room my dad asks the most stupid thing ever, "So how's Reeve?"

We don't talk about Reeve. No has in two years. I'm sure Kohen and I's parents are talking about her in private but never in front of us. Miss Wilmot sends a soft smile my way before answering my dad, "She says everything is going good but I'm not sure I should believe her."

Then my mom takes this as the perfect time to enter with chocolate chip cookies and vanilla ice cream. "Not sure you should believe who?" She asks.

"Reeve." Is all Miss Wilmot says.

My mom sighs, "Have you thought of making her come back. We all know that Toby and his new wife probably let her do whatever she wants."

I shoot Kohen a look but he shakes it off. This is the oddest dinner we've had in a while. We never talk about Reeve but we never talk about Toby, Miss Wilmot's ex-husband. He's a war topic.

"She's not staying with Toby anymore. He kicked her out when he found out his new wife was pregnant, something about not wanting his old life to interfere with his new one. Reeve is staying with her aunt now. She's adamant about never coming back."

From beside me, Kohen mumbles, "Good because no one wants her back."

I hate to say it but it's true. I don't want her back. Kohen doesn't want her back. None of her old friends do. It's just better if she stays away.

Miss Wilmot glares at Kohen but looks back at my mom when she says, "You should have her come back. Lord knows I've missed her. And I bet here is better here than with her aunt."

No, she should stay with her aunt.

I take a cookie off the tray and then hand one to Kohen.

My dad, the man who never voices his opinion says, "I'd love to have her back. Does she still play guitar?"

"We talk at least once a month and most times it's only for her to tell me that she's alive so I wouldn't know."

Kohen stands from the table. His chair squeaks on the floor drawing everyone's attention to him, "Adrian and I are headed out."

Our parent's nod. I'm grateful to get off the topic of Reeve Wilmot. Kohen is too.

 Kohen is too
