Harry
Finally! The day that Harry was able to see Louis. He had to show the physical therapist that he could move without help and without pain. He did a series of exercises that morning. The therapist told him that he would be back with the results.
"I just want to be cleared to go see him."
"I know mate. You will. They are starting to wean him off the ventilator, which is good news. He is starting to breathe on his own." Niall had brought him and Harry lunch. He came back from Louis' room, as he had brought Liam lunch as well.
"Thanks mate."
They sat and ate lunch in silence. This was Harry's first time eating real food. Not the disgusting hospital food that he was served for the past few days.
Soon the doctors came in. It was more people than Harry thought. Multiple doctors and nurses, and his physical therapist. Hopefully he would be cleared.
"Okay so we have some news." The doctor flipped through his clipboard, reading and then began. "Harry, you have been cleared. You will be discharged from the hospital in a few days. Once all the tests that we need to run have been cleared, you are good to go."
Harry was relieved. He hated the hospital and just wanted to go home. But he didn't want to go home without Louis.
"Can I see Louis?"
"Yes but first we have an update on him." Another doctor and nurse came forward, with different papers.
"So Louis has been doing very well. We still don't know why he slipped into a coma, but we know that it wasn't a stroke or anything like that. It's possible that was his body's way of protecting his brain and organs, so it just shut down." the doctor cleared his throat and continued.
"As you know, we are starting to wean him off the ventilator. Don't be alarmed if it sounds as if he is trying to clear his throat, that's what he is supposed to be doing. We know he feels it, so we think he has been able to hear us. Many coma patients are fully aware, just stuck in their bodies unable to move or open their eyes. This seems to be the case with Louis. We estimate that Louis will be waking in the next few days. Any questions?"
"What should we expect when he wakes up?" That was from Liam, who was concerned for his friend. He hasn't really left Louis' side, except when Niall wanted to see him.
"He'll probably be in a lot of pain and he will still have a long way to go. His lung is still healing, but we should be taking the tube out soon. His throat will undoubtedly be sore from the tube in this throat and probably have lots of headaches from his concussion. Try to keep the noise level in his room to a minimum to help with his healing. Anything else?"
They all nodded and the doctors left, leaving a nurse to bring Harry.
"Would you like to see him now?"
Harry nodded and got into the wheelchair. Since he was still a patient, he had to be brought in a wheelchair. Hospital policy.
"Do you want us to come with you Haz?" Niall asked, nervous that Harry might break down from seeing Louis.
"Could you wait outside? In case I need something. But I want to be alone with him." Harry hesitated at first but needed time alone with him, since he hasn't seen him at all.
"Of course. We will close the door. Just yell if you need us."
The four of them made their way down the hall towards Louis' room. Harry was nervous, not sure how to control himself.
As Harry was wheeled into the room, he was finally able to see that Louis was alive for himself. Even though he was hooked up to multiple wires and tubes, he was just glad he could see him.
He was wheeled next to Louis' bed, allowing for Harry to hold his hand. A few tears fell down his cheek, but he didn't care.
"Lou."
Louis made a weird noise, like the doctor said, but it startled Harry, as it was difficult to watch him.
"He isn't in pain" The nurse reassured him. "He's actually healing faster than we think. This is just part of the process.
Harry nodded and just sat there with Louis. The fact that he was able to see him was amazing. The last time he saw him was when he was dying in the emergency department. That was an awful sight to be left with all this time.
Harry! Finally! Are you okay darling?
"I like the color of your cast darling. Same color as my eyes" He ran his fingers along the length of his cast, noticing Niall's signature at the bottom. He chuckled to himself. "Oh Niall. He signed your cast at the bottom of your foot so you can't see it. He would be the one to do that."
Hold me Harry. I missed you.
Harry let go of his hand to sign Louis' cast.
No Harry please! Come back!
"You know you should keep this cast. As a memory of the worst anniversary ever." Harry laughed quietly, but remembered that it was supposed to be the best anniversary ever. He was supposed to propose. "You know I was supposed to propose to you that night. It was supposed to be during dessert. I was so excited."
Propose? I didn't think we were ready for that yet.
"I'll do it at a better time. Once you're out of the hospital we can go to a nice place and do it there. Yeah that sounds good. A simple proposal, but it was better than nothing."
That sounds nice Harry.
For the next few hours Harry sat and talked to Louis, not letting go of his hand. He would have to go back to his room at some point, but he didn't want to. He just wanted to be with Louis until he woke up.
It was getting late when Harry started to say his goodbyes.
"Alright love, I have to go back to my room. I'll be discharged in a few days and then I can be with you all the time. I love you." Harry gave him a kiss on the cheek, and stood there until something happened.
Don't leave Harry.
A movement. It was slight, but Harry felt it.
"Lou! Do that again!"
And he listened. The slightest movement of the finger, but Harry had caught it. He called Niall and Liam into the room, who were still sitting outside waiting for their friend.
"What? Is something wrong?" Niall rushed towards Louis' side, along with Liam. He caught what Harry was gesturing towards. "Did he just-"
"Yes! He just moved his finger. Go get the nurse."
Niall rushed out of the room, Liam following close behind, while Harry stared at Louis, tears forming in his softly closed eyes. A tear fell down his cheek, while Harry carefully wiped it away.
"Don't cry my love. This is great" The finger moving once again, when Niall, Liam and the nurse made their way into the room.
"He moved his finger. It's slight, but that's good right?" Niall pressed, but he was just eager for information.
"Yes this is good. It means he is closer to waking up. We will keep watch on him." The nurse wrote on her clipboard. "It's getting late. Harry, you have to go back to your room now."
"Okay" He turned towards Louis. "I'll see you in the morning love." Louis' finger twitched in Harry's hand, which caused Harry to smile and kiss his hand. "Goodnight Lou"
Goodnight Harry.
They all left the room for the night, with the great news that Louis was improving greatly, hoping for him to wake up soon.
