Harry
Harry was right by Louis' side the next morning. He was desperate to be by Louis when he woke up to make him feel safe. It was kind of difficult, as he was still a patient himself, but the hospital staff were compassionate and allowed him to stay during the daytime hours, which were 7:00am to 10:00pm. That meant Harry wasn't leaving Louis the entire day.
"Good morning Lou!" Harry was eager that morning. He was being discharged the following day, which meant he could be with Louis longer.
Hi Harry
"My mum is coming to see us today. She is excited to see you. She was nervous to visit you without me." Harry fidgeted with his fingers, staring at the floor. "Glad you're getting better."
Harry, why can't I wake up? Help me.
Louis' finger twitched slightly, just like it did the previous day. It gave Harry hope that he would soon wake up.
"I guess you're excited to see me then." Harry chuckled to himself, grabbing Louis' hand and giving it a kiss.
Nurses came in and out that morning. Since they were weaning Louis of the ventilator slowly, they had to continuously monitor him to make sure things were going smoothly.
What are they doing to me Harry? I can't breathe well.
Harry noticed a small tear fall down Louis' cheek. It brought tears to Harry's eyes. He hated seeing Louis in this state, but he knew he was improving, which was the only thing keeping Harry going.
"Don't cry darling. It's okay. You're getting better." Harry wiped his own tears, just wanting to see the old Louis again. "Just come back to me"
Harry placed his head on Louis' bed side, feeling the twitch of Louis' finger. He soon fell asleep for a while. He hadn't been sleeping much because he was too worried he would miss something while he slept. That kept him awake for most of the night.
He woke a few hours later, to the sound of a nurse changing Louis' dressing on his head. They had to change Harry's as well, so it was fine.
"Sorry hun. Didn't mean to wake you, but now that you are, I can change your dressing too." It was the same nurse that was always here. She seemed very nice and caring, which was reassuring.
"It's no problem ma'am. I-"
"Please call me Sarah."
"Sorry, Sarah. I kind of want to be awake anyways. How is he?" Harry sat up in the chair, lifting his head off of Louis' bed.
"He is good. No change from last night, but that's okay. It takes time." She palpated Harry's incision site before cleaning it, causing Harry to flinch slightly. She then redressed it. "Your incision looks nice. You should be good for your discharge tomorrow."
"Is he really improving?" Harry still had his doubts about Louis' condition. He was nervous they were just telling him things to make him feel better about himself. "Like is he really getting better?"
"Yes he is. Trust me. I was with Louis when he came into the ICU. His condition was really bad when he first got here. He had no color in his face, with almost no life in him." She gestured to Louis as she spoke, causing Harry to gain a small smile as he looked at him lying there peacefully. "Ever since you guys started visiting him, it's like it kick started his entire system. It put life back in his body and it's great to see that. I don't see a lot of things like that, so it's nice to see for a change."
"Thanks for that. It's nice to be reassured."
The nurse nodded, and left Louis and Harry to be alone.
