Chapter 23

NEWT POV:

I spent the rest of the day taking care of Thomas. He has a bloody fever and I can't give him pain killer. I waited nervously for night. Thomas did a lot of napping and vomiting. "We can't give him medicine" I said. "Well we have to give him something Newt. He is burning up at 115 degrees" said Jeff. "There has to be something else we can do" I said. "Well the best is giving him medicine" said Clint. "Please, just look for something else. Anything else. I'll see if the colds can make a smoothie or something cold. That might lower Tommy's temperature" I said. I left and went to the kitchen. I really hope that WCKD can fix this. I'm worried for Thomas. Gally ran up to me. "How is Thomas" asked Gally. "Bloody awful. The fever is getting worse. The medjacks are demanding we give Thomas medicine but the only medicine they have is pain killer. So you know why I can't bloody do that. But Tommy's temp keeps bloody going up. He is already at 115" I said.

"The medjacks told me that if we don't have it go down soon Thomas could die" I said. "Well a half griever can actually survive up to 298 degrees. But we can't tell the humans all that. Have you tried giving him a cold cloth or something" asked Gally. "Ya, I am hoping a bloody smoothie will work. I just hope we can keep Thomas safe till tonight" I said. I wiped my eyes. Gally put his arm around me as we walked. "It will be okay Newt. I know Thomas will be okay. He was a healthy male when we turned him" said Gally. "What if he was born a girl" I asked fearing the answer. "Well then he must of been on testosterone for whatever reason. Plenty of transgender become half griever and turn out okay. It would have to be something else but you could have him drink your blood" said Gally. "What" I asked. "It won't cure him but it will help lower the fever. Sometimes a new halfing needs to consume DNA from a healthy halfing so the new DNA knows how to work" said Gally. "Okay, I'll try that. I just hope we can make it to WCKD and they can fix Tommy" I said.

"If he was transgender then the reaction is actually more common because the changing sex chromosomes. But there would be other signs" said Gally. "Like what" I asked. Gally let go of me as we walked. "Well there would be hunger with cravings, energetic, mood swings, temporary memory loss, really thirsty, tiredness, and sometimes gas. It's all temporary but let's worry about helping Thomas. But I know he will be okay Newt" said Gally. "I hope so. Let's just make him a bloody smoothie" I said. I entered the kitchen with Gally. "Hey Frypan, do you have anything cold we can give to Thomas" I asked. "Ya man, check the freezer" said Frypan. Gally and I got what we need to make a smoothie. We then took it to the hospital. Gally drew some blood from me and put it in the smoothie. I found Thomas naked on his bed. "I got hot" said Thomas. I blushed and gave Thomas the smoothie. It had a straw. "Let's sit you up Tommy" I said. I sat Thomas up and gave him the smoothie. He started to slurp it down. "He looks like klunk" said Gally. Thomas stopped drinking and yelped. Thomas was in pain and had his eyes closed. "What, what's wrong" I asked. "Brain freeze, ah aha" said Thomas.
