I wake on the morning of my choosing ceremony. The house is silent. When my father returned home last night, he was angry as he was breaking everything. He came into my room and I pretended to be asleep. I heard him mutter something to what I guess was himself, something to do with me getting it after the ceremony as I wouldn't leave. I haven't spoken to him since my test, I am glad, as he can always tell when I try to lie to him. It is like he should've been in Candor as he is like a human lie detector. When he left my room last night, I quietly cried myself to sleep, they were more happy tears as I knew that my father will know be unable to leave me as I am leaving. He was never really a father to me, i mean what sort of father abuses his kids, that man is insane, that's why, to me, he is just Marcus.
I walked to the ceremony as I left with plenty of time to spare. I arrived at the hub and saw all the Dauntless members running inside, I then realised that I took more time than I thought as I only had five minutes until the ceremony started. Inside, everyone was gathered in a large room, there was five sections, one for each faction, which were all in a semi-circle around the five bowls which we would drop our blood into. I've been here so many times but it looks different, whether that is just because it is my choosing, I am unsure. In the five bowls there is grey stone for abnegation, water for eurdite, Earth for amity, glass for Candor and hot coals for dauntless.
I take my set in reverse alphabetical order with the other 16 year olds. I look up and catch Marcus's eyes, he smiles at me so I return with a smile. I do not want him to suspect anything, I want him to be completely shocked but my 'betrayal' as he was so certain that I would stay.
I blank out as soon as Marcus begins to read out the names once he is finished with his speech about the five factions and why we are here today. I can hear the sobs of what I can only imagine is the parents of children who have transferred. I knew that Marcus would not cry, when my siblings transferred, he burnt all of there belongings and made out as if they never existed.
"Jamie Eaton" I hear Marcus shout. I slowly get up and walk towards the bowls. I still don't know where I am going so I am going through all the factions in my head. Abnegation and Amity are definitely a no, Candor is also a boo as I lie too easily, Erudite is also a no as I know that I will not be smart enough to pass there initiation, but then, it only leaves me with one choice, I join my brother and sister in Dauntless.
As I get to the bowls, Marcus hands me a clean knife, he gives me his evil smirk. As I cut into my palm, I do not feel a thing or even wince at it. I stare into Marcus's eyes as I place my hand over the bowl full of hot coals, Marcus raises his eyebrow as if to say 'what on earth do you think you are doing'. Then I hear the sizzling of my blood hitting the coals and the whole of dauntless are cheering. Before I turn to join my new faction, I look back to Marcus, he gives me the same look he gave to Tobias and Susan, then look of betrayal. That we are no longer family. I turn and run towards my new faction and I laugh, I cannot say that I am going to miss Marcus. I am happy that he will no longer consider me family, I stopped considering him family a long time ago.
