Mayne Alyssa Duncan lay semi-conscious as the staff bustled around treating those with more life threatening injuries. Her instincts had told her to stay still and remain as motionless as possible, that if she played her cards right she would get answers that she desperately needed. Her mind was trying to be alert but she was too exhausted to focus on anything, so she just remained still and listened. After a time she was usher into an empty room for evaluation. The nurses noticed quickly who she was and sounded the alert to the guards that were pacing for information on the more powerful elites. "Fetch the Vice President now." The nurse ordered one of the guards.
Mayne's mind drifted between the reality and the past, she remembered the green beauty of the city. The buildings were built to flow with nature rather than fight against it. The energy they used was gained through miniature wind turbines that were placed at the peak of the roofs and through Temp Panels; glass panes that generated electricity based on a temperature difference on either side of the glass. All sewage was filtered and cleansed then fed back to the waterways that ran beside all footpaths. The waterways were kept clean and pure throughout the city. Every home had a compost bin and no trash bin since all trash was biodegradable. The entire city was zero waste and looked as if it was one giant floral maze garden. The air was clean and the vehicle floated a good seven to eight feet above their heads, for this reason most residents had the front doors on the second floor leaving the ground level to be indoor-outdoor living. The city was as close to perfection as you could get and retain your freedoms.
The computers were all integrated into the buildings so well that the walls were touch screen monitors. All lights were simply bright lights in the monitors so you could slide the light on the ceiling around the room as you needed it. You could even make the ceiling look like the night sky. The cooling and heating systems for the houses focused on the temperature of the energy of the house versus the temperature of the air. This cooled and heated the rooms quicker and with more efficiency and gave the option of giving the room a crisp, cool breeze in the heat of summer. Their vegetable gardens were countertop growers that could produce any fruit or vegetable you wanted in minutes. Her parents had even developed a replicating system that made meat, eggs and milk on demand without having to harm any animals. Her parents had even developed a system similar to the replicators that grew lumber. No other city on the planet wanted this technology, they all thought it was unnatural to live so greenly but to Mayne it was perfect, with one touch of a button, you had firewood, a steak and a salad.
The arguing of nurses brought Mayne back to reality, they had just realized who she was, one of the nurses was furious and yelling until a familiar male voice entered the room "Why weren't you paying attention" Ian Todd stormed in like a rain storm and looked at the battered teenager in the bed. Mayne was just opening her eyes as the exhausted Vice President had entered the room. The doctors were bustling around the tiny thing in the bed so he stayed back against the wall and just watched. He had known this girl's parents, they were the brightest of the Elite. Both had been the reason for the jump in technology for several years in a row. They were the most brilliant of minds he had ever seen and now both were gone.
He pressed himself tighter against the wall, unfamiliar to the feelings of helplessness that had been overwhelming him today. He was so powerful but all Ian the VP of one of the most power countries could do was watch, still in shock. All that was left of his friends was their child named after them, her father Mayne was his college roommate, he had insisted that his name was first since he had taken his wife Alyssa's surname of Duncan. Ian had been the one to introduce them. The child before him was a combination of both their talents and looks, but no one knew how far her abilities truly went, her parents refused to have her tested.
