LYDIA POV:

Lydia ran her hand through her blonde hair, sighing as she put down the letter that had arrived in the mail not five hours ago. A smile began to timidly creep up into her face as she read it over for what must have been the twelfth time that day.

Dear citizens of Idris,

We are glad to inform your family and yourself that this year, we will be holding a selection for the heir of the throne: Prince Alexander Gideon Lightwood.

It has come to our attention that in this household there is a daughter from the age 16-21. It would be a great honour to have this said young lady in the castle to participate in the selection.

She may apply at the post office of your local city.

Best wishes,

Her Royal Majesty,

Queen Maryse Lightwood of Idris

Lydia knew that it was pointless to hope that she would be picked: she was only a mere five. And when it came to things like selections, usually the ones that got selected were twos or threes. And on top of that, every girl in the country from the ages 16-21 got this exact same letter.

Her twin sister, Clary, hadn't put any thought into this letter; she had opened it skimmed through until she got to the word 'selection', and then threw it in the trash bin. Lydia was the only one in their family that knew that she was secretly dating a six. And she only knew this because she had caught them heatedly making out in the stables a couple of weeks ago. Clary had begged and begged for her not to tell their mom because it would have meant the end of her and this mystery boy's relationship.

In the end, Lydia didn't tell because what kind of a sister would she be if she spilled all of her sister's secrets? Clary and Lydia shared all of their secrets with each other.

If you saw them walking down the street you would have never guessed they were related let alone twins. While Lydia had straight white-ish, yellow-ish hair, Clary had a mass of unruly bright red curls that always seemed to have a mind of their own. The only thing they had in common in their facial features was their bright green, emerald eyes.

------------------------------------------------------------

A day later, Lydia had applied for the selection and was now walking dow the short stairs that led from the hallway where the bedrooms were to the kitchen and dining/living room area. She could see the back of her sister's head peeking out from behind the couch. She was watching the Report. Lydia slowly walked up to her from behind and placed a hand on her shoulder making Clary jump slightly and turn around to smile at her sister.

"Mom will be here any minute now," Lydia told her sister "She said she wouldn't miss tonight's Report for the end of the world."

"I know. I just think that this is a waste of time. Why couldn't they let Prince Alexander just choose a wife on his own?" She responded

"Yeah. I agree. But then I would never get to meet the hottest prince of Idris!"

"Eww. Alexander is definitely not the hottest."

"Oh yeah? And who is?"

"Jace." she replied, her cheeks turning bright pink at the mention of the second oldest prince.

Unlike Alexander, Isabelle and Maxwell, Jace had been adopted when his mother and father had died when he was 4. Maryse's sister Celine was Jace's birth mother. She had married at a very young age and had had Jace with a man named Stephen Herondale.

The door slammed open and their mother, Jocelyn, walked in with a huge smile on her face.

"My girls!" she said with her arms outstretched.

Both Lydia and Clary took turns hugging their mom.

"And now is the moment that you have all been waiting for!" The announcer said through the crackle of the tiny cheap television.

The girls and their mother hurried and sat down on the couch watching it with huge matching green eyes.

"This year is a very special year!" He continued with a smile that showed all of his perfectly arranged white teeth. "We are all gathered her to announce the chosen of his majesty Prince Alexander's selection!"

Just get to the point! Lydia thought as she crossed her fingers and squeezed her eyes shut for two seconds, praying the her name would be called.
