"How have you been?"
The balcony of Oikawa's place was as tranquil and cool as the inside was hot and chaotic. The night was beautifully dark, stars winked about and the city lights were no match for their glory.
"Your present is quite shit, you know?"
"Oh, shut up."
Tobio already knew that, he knew his gift was dumb; really, who in their right mind would gift someone a photo frame and jersey? He should've just stuck with the volleyball...
Well, at least he compensated for that embarrassment by throwing handfuls of candy and a brand new i-pad in the bag.
Nothing can go wrong with candy, right?
Oikawa had taken a piece of said candy and unwrapped it, his slender fingertips easily picking it's way around the toffee. Finally he removed it, and with a subtle side glance at Tobio, he stuck it at the tip of his tongue, tasting it before popping it in his mouth.
"How is it like, playing in a huge team?" A slight breeze blew from his right, causing a little strand of brown hair to fall into his eyes; he didn't bother pushing it away.
A little prickle of fear crawled under Tobio's skin; not because of the cold of the weather, but because of the coldness in Oikawa's eyes,. They weren't as bright as he remembered them to be, all signs of gold were gone - maybe it was the dull lighting but-
"Tobio?"
"-It's amazing, yeah, it's really fun and... amazing."
Oikawa chuckled under his breath, the conversation died as the two looked ahead onto the streets. Tobio frantically tried to grasp at his original train of thought; what he was originally trying to talk to his senior about.
"Um... Oikawa-san!" He suddenly burst, causing the other to flinch, "Um, how have you been doing?"
Oikawa looked at the other male, slowly registering his words before he chuckled, his eyes crinkling; that was one of the things that Tobio was glad that didn't change about him.
"You heard about my condition huh? Quite depressing isn't it?" He smiled sadly, calculating his next choice of words, trying to soften the blow on the boy who he knew cared about him.
But really, is there any way that that's even close to possible?
Oikawa was sick. Terribly sick, and he was falling apart slowly, and he went ahead and found love, right now at this pathetic time.
"Oikawa-san, I believe you can live through this, you've always been able to overcome any obstacle, despite how hard they were. I know you can beat this too."
Tobio's voice was nowhere near the meaning of his words; he was desperately trying to convince Oikawa.
And convince himself.
"Thanks, Tobio. But...."
The younger male gripped the railing on the balcony, hesitating to meet Oikawa's eyes and dreading what he might say next. He held his breath, his knuckles going white and he tried to see against the wind, which had gotten more violent in seconds.
"I'm ready to give up."
A little smile rested on Oikawa's lips, he looked around to see the shocked face of Tobio; his blue eyes were wide and his mouth agape; the brunette didn't know his words would have such impact.
"N-no...." Tobio shook his head, continuing, "No, no no no, Oikawa-san, " voice dipping down to a whisper, "Why?"
"What," he started, looking down, "Do you want me to do, huh? Continue this.... Sappy 'never gonna give up' act? No, no I can't."
Oikawa took a deep breath, catching himself, "I'm done." His tone hitting peak conclusion, wanting to end the conversation dead there.
But the other boy wasn't done, "What about your friends? Your family-"
"Fuck them all!" He burst, hair wild and his face red, rage evident in his posture. Tobio cringed back, utter shock in his eyes.
A dead silence hung in the air after his violent outburst, they were both frozen. "I'm- I'm so sorry, I don't know what happened..."
What the hell just happened? Why did I just do that?
"....Oikawa.... San." The expression on Tobio's face spoke of absolute disbelief and fear.
The brown haired boy pulled the other male into his arms, hugging him fiercely; something about the sudden contact awakened a torrent of memories for the both of them; their junior high memories and the matches they had...
Tobio's memory was clear as crystal; he recalled Oikawa's familiar scent and millions of memories swirled into his head. He hugged him harder, a childish sense within him, wishing that he could go back in time to relive the bickering and fighting.
As for Oikawa, Tobio's scent overwhelming with nostalgia, the distinct smell invoked echoes of his cyan coloured team, his friends and kid Tobio clutching onto his jersey.
But.... there was more, there was another piece that he couldn't quite recall, he scrunched his forehead, concentrating as he hugged Tobio harder, trying to remember.
But he couldn't, his teammates were all but a blur to him.
"Oikawa-san?"
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to yell at you, I don't know why...."
"You're wrong." He pulled back and looked once more into those familiar brown eyes of Oikawa, just like how he did when he issued his challenge out all those years ago; to beat him and become the best.
"Your friends, and your mom; they all care about you. We all care about you." He continued, "You're not alone, there's me, Hinata, Akaashi-san and Bokuto-san, and even your past teammates."
"But-"
"Hanamaki-san and Mattsukawa-san, even Iwaizumi-san-"
"Wait, wait..." Oikawa gripped the younger boy's shoulder, confusion cascading on him.
"Who's Hanamaki and Mattsuwaka?"
