A/N: This was definitely one of my earlier pieces. IDK what I was doing...
Dreamshade. An interesting plant said to only grow on one island in one realm, Neverland.
Now, I know what you're thinking. Neverland? There's no such place! Um, first of all, yes there is. I should know, I live here. It sucks by the way. Pan's a dick, the Lost Boys are annoying, Tinker Bell hides from us, and the pirates, particularly Captain Hook, are boring. Not to mention the mermaids will kill me if I get too close to the water, so I can't even swim! But there is one saviour to this place, the Dreamshade plants.
They're so different and interesting from most of the other plants I've seen. The vines' potent poison is powerful enough to kill a man within days or weeks, depending on how close to the heart the wound was.
All of this plant is so interesting and unique. Apparently, there isn't a cure to it either. But, I'd like to test that theory. I've never been one to play it safe, but even I think I should. As much as I love exploring and learning, as much as I know how having a disease or a poison can push people into making an antidote or cure. I'm also smart enough to know that isn't the case for everyone or every plant. Call me a mad scientist if you must, but I'll find a cure, even if I have to use the plant on every animal on the island.
Carefully cutting a thorn of one of the Dreamshade vines, the poison dripped out. It fell to the ground, burning the plant matter below away. I pulled out a small plastic bag and slipped the thorn in. I crouched down, pushing away the leaves that hadn't been hit by the poison. The tweezers I used to put away the thorn were once again of use to me. I used them to put the pieces of living matter, or more accurately dead matter, into another baggie.
"Interesting..." I said.
Twigs snapped behind me. "What is?" I turned to see Pan behind me, a scowl on his face and arms crossed.
I sighed, standing. "I think you already know. The only interesting thing on the entire island." I grabbed my walking staff off the tree it was resting on.
"Dreamshade." I nodded. Pan walked towards me. "You do remember when I told you that stuff can kill you, right? Or are you thick enough to still try and find an antidote?"
"I do remember. I also don't care. You are a liar after all." I got right into his face, not caring about how he would react. "There are a million and one things in existence that, when used right, can not just destroy but save or create. For every poison, there has always been a cure or antidote. All you have to do is find it."
"You can't actually believe that?"
"It's what's kept me alive all these years," I said. The leaves beneath me crunched under my boots as I walked away.
Pan sighed. "Where are you going?" I looked over my shoulder. "Camp's that way," he said, gesturing downhill. Downhill is the exact opposite of where I want to go.
"I'm not going back to camp. I have more data to collect and not a lot of time to waste."
"Y/N, you're not going to be able to do anything when nightfall comes. Just come back to camp and you can continue your collecting in the morning when it isn't so close to nightfall."
Stopping in my tracks, I turn. "Why do you care so much? It's almost as if you don't want me to die. Which is weird. You are the one who warned me about the incurable Dreamshade after all."
Pan started tapping his foot, unwilling to look me in the eye. "I do care because you are the only one on Neverland with such an extensive knowledge of plants and cures. And frankly, you're the only one I trust in the kitchen."
