Ian packed his work items together and waved bye to his brother Lip. Lip waved back and Ian left the apartment. While walking to the elevator he saw his neighbors Rey and Ben, along with their two kids. Ben waved and signed "Have a nice day." Ian smiled and signed back "Thank you." They all waved and the daughter gave a high five to Ian. He smiled to her and gave a high five back. He walked by and got into the elevator. He pushed the button and smiled to himself as he leaned back on the mirror wall."Hurry up Mickey, I'm going to be late." Mandy yelled from the door. "Hold on, calm your tits." Mickey said as he tied his shoes. "I was late yesterday and the day before that, hurry the fuck up." She yelled and held her purse tighter. "Aw fuck." Mickey said frustrated and stood up. "Get to your job, I'll take the El." He said and she shook her head. "Fine." She grunted and slammed the door. "Bitch." He mumbled and continued fixing his shoes. He grabbed his coat and his headphones. He grabbed his pack as well and he finally headed out the door of the apartment he shared with his sister. He walked past some people that lived on the same hall as them. "Hey Mickey." Ben greeted and his wife Rey waved. "Hey." He said back and smiled at their daughter. She raised her arm up and they high fived. "Have a good day Mickey." Rey said in her British accent. He waved and then entered the elevator. The doors closed and he tilted his head back.
Ian was confused. The El always left at 7:35 each morning which always made Ian arrive at work at 8:10 each day. His eyebrows frowned when he didn't see the El. He looked back and forth nothing. He took a deep breathe and reached for his note pad. He needed help, it was hard for other people to understand him when he tried to talk so he always had his notebook handy. He sat down on a waiting bench and looked around for his pen. He grunted when he realized he left it. He exhaled and sat back.
Mickey watched as the red head guy continued looking for something. He arrived there a little after him. He was standing by himself until he started digging around and sat by Mickey. There was an announcement saying the El was going to be about 35 minutes late. Mickey watched the red head shake his head. Ian caught a glimpse of the dark haired man starring at him. They locked eyes, Mickey smiled and Ian stared at him. "Hey." Mickey said and Ian waved. Not much of a talker Mickey thought and continued staring at him. "You alright?" Mickey asked but no response only a nod.
Ian stared back at the other man, trying his best to read his lip. The other man continued staring at Ian, then Ian got an idea. He thought too long and the dark haired man looked down at his phone. Ian sighed and then stood up straight. He tapped the mans shoulder and Mickey stared at him again, Ian read his lips and he asked What?. Ian tapped his mouth and the other man looked very confused. He clenched his fists and then pointed to his ears. Mickey stared at the man. Ian tapped his ears again. "Oh." Mickey said when he understood. "Oh." He said again and Ian nodded. "You're deaf?" Mickey asked and Ian smiled then nodded.
Mickey turned his body to him and smiled. "I'm Mickey." He said slowly and Ian nodded. Ian started using his hand, not for signing but using them as a train. He was curving them and Mickey stared at him. God he really wished he had his pen. He curved his hand and Mickey nodded. "Trains." He said and Ian nodded. Mickey stared at Ian who looked like he was thinking. He looked down at Mickey wrist which had a watch. He grabbed his wrist and pointed to it. Mickey looked at the watch then him. "Time." He said and Ian nodded. "Train times." Mickey said and Ian smiled with a nod. "They're going to be 35 minutes late." He said as slow as he could.Ian tilted his head in confusion. Mickey raised his hands up telling him to wait. He grabbed his bag and pulled out a red pen. Ian smiled and handed him his notebook. Mickey wrote down what he said and handed it to Ian. Ian made a sound which caught Mickeys attention. He nodded and Mickey gave him the pen. "Guess it would have been easier to ask you for a pen huh." Ian wrote and handed it to Mickey who smiled. "Man I barely got trains with your hands, would've had a harder time with you making out pen." He wrote and handed it back to Ian. Ian laughed and Mickey stared at the man. He liked his laugh.
"I'm Ian by the way, thank you for your help Mickey, would have been lost without you." Ian wrote and Mickey smiled. He reached his hand out and they shook hands. "You're welcome Ian, guess it was good I was running late for work." He wrote and Ian smiled. "Sorry about that, me too, lucky me." He wrote and Mickey smiled. Ian could feel the vibrations of the El and looked up. It was there. Mickey smiled at Ian and wrote in the notebook. "Here's my number, just in case you need my help again or whatever, I'm just a text away." He wrote and Ian smiled then nodded. He signed Thank you which Mickey understood. They got up and walked into different carts, waving bye to each other.
~~~~~~~~~~~Three Years Later~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mickey arrived back at his apartment and saw Ian in the kitchen. They moved in their own apartment about a year ago. Mickey smiled and kissed Ian. It was pretty late, Mickey had the night shift and Ian was already home. "Hi." Ian said his voice a little groggy but either way Mickey loved it. "Hi." Mickey said and gave him another peck. Mickey raised his hands and signed Ready for bed? I'm pooped. Ian smiled and nodded grabbing his hand and leading them to their room. After a shower, brushing their teeth, and finally putting their pajamas on, they crawled into bed. Mickey laid against Ian's chest and Ian had his big warm arms draped over him. Mickey snuggled back to him and kissed their hands that intertwined. Mickey raised his hands and signed I love you. Ian kissed the back of his head and smiled. "I love you." He said and Mickey held him tighter. They feel asleep together happy. The last thing they both stared at was the framed note from Ian's notebook from all those years ago. Their first conversation, framed by their bedside.
