The mortals weren’t too happy about the arrangement.  They really weren’t happy when Mel and I came back late.  “What in Hades took so long?” Anna finally decided on asking.

I just smiled.  “Oh, nothing special, just making actual progress.”

Kelpy surged forward.  “Are you saying-”

“Yes.  We leave for Chicago in the morning.”

They surrounded us, and dragged us to a tent, which I recognised to be Jason’s.  That was a bad choice on their part.  It wouldn’t be very hard to rile up Hot Pocket, and the tent would go up in smoke with everyone inside it.  I shared a glance with Mel.  She was being submissive, but her eyes were dangerously dark.  I almost laughed.  The mortals were trying to hold two goddesses captive and question them.  They wouldn’t make this mistake again.  Gracie stepped forward, trying (and quite honestly failing) to be intimidating.  He looked like Lord Zeusy when he was tired of being mad at people.  I bit my tongue to keep from saying anything.  “Why in the world did you dump us on the banks of the Styx?”

“So that I could talk to Melaena about some things that don’t concern you, Sparkles.”

His eyes flashed menacingly.  I smiled.  Kids of Zeus were childsplay to me.  Giving up, he turned to my companion.  “What did the two of you talk about?”

“Nothing that you need to worry about.  You should get some sleep.  Chicago’s a big city, and we don’t have forever, ya know.”

“What’s so important about Chicago?” Piper asked, obviously using charmspeak.  I decided to act like it affected me, even though it really didn’t.  There are perks to being a goddess, after all.

“That’s the lead we got.  That, and Olympia.”

“As in Washington?” Anna clarified.

“Yep.  Can we sleep now? Shadowing takes a lot out of us,” I lied.

Kelpy sighed impatiently.  “Not until we know we can trust you.”

I couldn’t help it.  I laughed, locking eyes with Melaena.  We covered ourselves in shadows so thick that not even Nico or Hazel could see us.  We left, going to my tent and uncovering ourselves just slightly.  I grabbed my mp3, starting to play music, knowing full well that the others would be extremely confused about what had just happened.

“Are they really that stupid?” She asked.

“Apparently.  Anna’s supposed to be smart, that’s why I like her.  But maybe I was wrong about her.  I’ve been wrong before.”

“What do you mean?”

“Well, there’s this girl I share a Cabin with.  I thought she at least cared a little, but she’s just a bitch.  I’m not necessarily surprised, but it stings a bit.  I’ve really only had two people care fully about me, and my mother isn’t one of them.”

Mel nodded.  “I get that.”

“I’m glad someone does.”

She opened her mouth to speak, but we both noticed the change in the atmosphere.  I looked up, grinning.

“Grandpa!” I exclaimed, laughing.

He smiled.  “Good to see you, Lara.  And you must be Melaena.”

Mel didn’t move a muscle.  I, however, had gotten up, launching myself at the god of darkness.

“You haven’t changed a bit, have you?”

“You haven’t either!” I protested.
“What’s going on, Grandpa?”

“Cutting to the chase, are we?”

“It’s clearly important.”

“Yes, I suppose it is.  We can’t have the two of you running the Underworld forever, can we?”

“Well, you can, it just might not go well.”

“Ha ha.  I have important information for the two of you, but I don’t have very long.”

“What is it?”

“Lara has to switch.”

“Come again?”

“You need to switch to your Roman form, little bird.”

I stood there in shock.  “That makes no sense.”

“But it does.  Pluto was the one who was kidnapped, which means that Hades went with him.  He’ll be much easier to find if you’re in your Roman form, sweetpea.”

I rolled my eyes.  “Fine.”  I went into my full blown goddess form, then switched my consciousness into my Roman form.  I turned back to Mel.

"Remind me to answer to Laraline."

"Why?"

"Because when I'm Roman, my name is Ligeia."

Mel nodded.  The mortals weren't gonna have a good day tomorrow.  I'd make sure they knew who's in charge.
