This novel is about a young African girl's journey from her home land to the United States. Other aspects of the plot are a little lesson on how love can be found even in the toughest situations, and a hell of a lot of heartbreak. The book educates the reader about slavery and the cruel reality of how people of different ethnicity were considered lesser to the whites of the past. It takes place in the 18th and 19th century. (1700s and 1800s)
