it's time to let go of this endless summer afternoon.

- kageyama and hinata experience the epic highs and lows of a relationship.

[prompt - 400 lux (by lorde) as the beginning of a relationship and hard feelings (also by lorde) as the end.]

it all started on a completely normal day - they had just finished volleyball practice and hinata was walking home with kageyama. well, really, hinata was walking kageyama home, since his house was much further, but kageyama didn't like putting it that way. there wasn't anything unusual about the way they stood slightly apart, hinata trailing his bike beside him, or in the way kageyama's stomach was fluttering every time he looked at his friend. kageyama would never have expected what was about to happen.

they were both silent as they felt the odd rain drops hit their faces, but when they became more frequent, and the soft patter of the rain filled their ears, kageyama and hinata looked at each other with the same expression before quickening their pace, trying to get out before a storm would hit. kageyama's house wasn't too far, bit hinata was going to have to ride his bike for half an hour in this weather, and it was out of necessity that kageyama turned to hinata before he entered his house to say -

"you should come inside."

hinata widened his eyes and then grinned. "thought you'd never ask."

he dropped his bike and skipped up the steps as kageyama rolled his eyes and turned his key into the lock.

"mm, your house smells good," hinata remarked, sniffing the air as they both stepped into the warmth of kageyama's brightly lit house.

"really?" said kageyama, not facing hinata as he was slipping his shoes off. he wished he didn't feel so nervous, but he couldn't help it; this was the first time he'd ever had a friend over at his house, and it didn't help that this friend was one whom kageyama naturally felt a bit nervous around.

"yeah," said hinata simply. "it smells like you."

kageyama blinked, staring at the wall, not knowing what to say. maybe he should just ignore it - what exactly was he supposed to say to something like that?

he finally turned around and hinata promptly began laughing.

"what?" kageyama demanded.

"nothing - it just kind of looks like you're crying because of the rain," said hinata, smiling as he stepped closer and reached his hand out to touch the water droplets on kageyama's face. kageyama wished he had more control over his body, so he didn't have to stiffen and look at hinata in that way when they got close. but then hinata looked back at him with that expression, not moving his fingers off kageyama's cheek, and kageyama's eyes dropped down to his lips.

kageyama saw hinata's adam's apple bob down for a moment before hinata's face got closer - hinata was now standing on his tiptoes, his fingers pressed against kageyama's jawline while he pressed his lips against kageyama's, sending shudders of warmth all over kageyama's skin. his lips were so soft, and smooth, and they felt so good on kageyama's; even though kageyama's heart was beating like crazy, he couldn't help but melt into hinata, trailing his fingers across hinata's face as they kissed, wanting to touch every part of that soft skin.

kageyama wished he could stay there forever, but there came a time when he needed to breathe, and when he pulled away for a moment, hinata lowered himself to the ground again, biting his lip.

"um - i'm sorry," he said quietly, fiddling with his fingers as he pulled his sleeves over them.

"no, it's -" kageyama didn't want to say 'it's okay' like it was something hinata shouldn't have done, but he didn't know what else to say. "i actually - wanted to do that, too."
