hajime wanted to say he'd grown out of his birthday, like most of his friends had, but he couldn't help feeling special on that special day. at 14, he was certainly too old to throw a birthday party, but you were never too old to get birthday wishes from people, which was what hajime really enjoyed. not that he was obsessed with being the center of attention (like his best friend kind of was), but it was nice to have people think about you for once, remember you and appreciate the day you were born.

of course, the first person to do that, on every one of hajime's birthdays, was his best friend, oikawa toru.

"happy birthday, iwa chan!" he exclaimed giddily when hajime opened his front door to see toru on his front step, waiting for him. he immediately threw his arms around hajime, who stiffened, though he secretly liked being doted over like this. "happy birthday to you... happy birthday to you..."

"okay, okay, that's enough," hajime said hastily, pulling away before toru could embarrass him with a lengthy rendition of the birthday song right on his doorstep.

toru smiled, stepping back, before pulling a slip of paper out of his pocket and handing it to hajime. "here's your present."

hajime took it, confused, as the thing toru had promised to get him could not be contained in a slip of paper. he held out hope that there was something special in there, but he shouldn't have.

"boyfriend for a day?" he read out, shocked, as he glanced up at a beaming toru.

"yep," he answered brightly.

"what does that mean?"

"exactly how it sounds - i'll be your boyfriend for a day! how fun is that?"

hajime narrowed his eyes. "toru, i am not one of your fangirls, i don't want you to be my boyfriend for a day."

toru's smile sagged. "then what do you want?"

"i wanted another controller, like you told me you were going to buy!" hajime yelled, feeling childishly frustrated. if it was anyone else, he probably would've been able to hold in his disappointment, but he knew toru was only doing this to annoy him.

toru flinched, raising his hands defensively in front of him. "well, the thing is - i've kinda been saving up -"

"so you decided to go with this cheap ass birthday gift," hajime muttered. he started to toss the paper aside, but then he paused, an idea forming in his head. "wait... boyfriends... buy stuff for their... partners, right?"

"uh..." said toru nervously, stepping back. "well, like i said, i- i've been saving..."

"but it's my birthday, toru..." hajime continued, a smile spread across his lips as he put his hands on toru's shoulders. "boyfriends have to buy stuff for the people they're dating on their birthdays at least."

"i - i suppose..." toru replied, sighing.

"awesome!" said hajime happily, now wrapping his arm around toru as they continued down the street together. "for my birthday date, i want you to take me to the mall first, boyfriend."

"you are the only person who has ever taken advantage of me like this, iwa chan," toru mumbled, and hajime grinned.

"and i always will be."

of course, the first thing hajime did when he and toru reached the mall was drag his new boyfriend to the video game store, where he got to choose his own controller, and had to endure toru's endless complaints.

"bro, the reason i need to get a new one in the first place is because i always give mine to you when you come over," hajime reminded him when toru looked like he was about to cry as he paid for the controller at the cash register.
