kageyama and hinata were both very easily convinced to participate in competitions, specifically if these competitions were against each other. they only really hung out in the gym when they were playing volleyball, but if the two were spotted somewhere outside the gym, it could be assumed that it was because they were competing against each other for something.
so of course, going to the arcade was once again so that they could compete over a video game. kageyama was well aware that the only reason hinata had incited this competition was because he had no money and he really wanted meat buns, but he still participated, simply because he wanted to see if he could do it. kageyama usually excelled at anything with some kind of athletic component, but this was different. he had never even played video games as a kid, so he was a complete amateur. still, he wanted to be able to top hinata.
"okay, wait, i thought you said you were broke?" asked kageyama as they entered the arcade. "i hope you're not expecting me to pay for all the games here."
"don't worry, i've got money on my card," said hinata, winking at kageyama as he pulled out his empty wallet and flashed his arcade card. "i come here all the time, so there's a bunch of credit."
kageyama shrugged and they both proceeded to the reception thing, but before they could get there, hinata spotted something - or someone.
"kenma, hey!" he said excitedly, approaching the nekoma player who looked as though he was concentrating very hard on a game called demonhunt. kageyama knew the nekoma team had come to miyagi for their practice match last friday, but he didn't know they'd be staying for the whole weekend, so it was a bit jarring to see kozume here.
"oh, shoyo, uh..." he looked at kageyama and frowned.
"kageyama," hinata supplied, and even though he and kozume didn't know each other all that well, it was still a bit insulting to kageyama that the other didn't even know his name.
"right. what are you guys doing here?" asked kozume absentmindedly as he rapidly pressed the buttons and pulled on the joystick.
"playing games, same as you," hinata replied. "how's the game?"
"fun, but extremely challenging," said kozume, gritting his teeth. "i can't seem to get past level 14."
kageyama raised his eyebrows; he couldn't imagine being so invested in a game that had more than 14 levels.
"if it's hard for you, i'm not even gonna try," said hinata, laughing and clapping kozume on the back. a moment later, kozume gasped, his eyes lighting up.
"wait, what? i won?"
"oh, that's great!" hinata gushed as kozume seemed confused at his own abilities but continued to proceed to the next level anyways. "well, me and kageyama are gonna get our card scanned. good luck!"
after leaving hinata's card with the receptionist, the two made their way back to kozume, who looked frustrated all over again.
"level 15 is even harder!" he exclaimed, his hands moving faster now. "i don't even know how -" his breath cut off as the screen suddenly filled with confetti and announced that kozume had passed level 15. he looked even more bewildered now, gazing at his own hands in wonder before tilting his head in thought and gazing at hinata. before he could say anything, however, hinata was called back to reception. apparently, there was something wrong with his card.
"what? that's bullshit!" hinata proclaimed, marching over there, kageyama following closely behind.
"wait!" kozume cried out, grabbing hinata's hand. "don't leave. i - i think you're the reason i keep winning. you're good luck."
