hinata plans big for kageyama's birthday, not understanding why on earth he wouldn't want to celebrate.

hinata clasped the cold metal handles of his bicycle as he walked alongside kageyama, trying to keep up with his pace, but finding it difficult as he was freezing cold right now. still, that didn't stop him from his endless chatter that kageyama never seemed to pay attention to. hinata didn't care much; this was sort of a routine as they were walking home after practice together.

"but i feel like the class should get you cupcakes and stuff on your birthday," hinata was saying, after he finished telling kageyama about the boy who brought donuts to the class today. "not that i'm complaining. i'm just glad i have a summer birthday, to be honest. what about you, when's your birthday?"

kageyama muttered an answer, but he could hardly be heard over the howling wind.

"what was that?" asked hinata, cupping a gloved hand to his ear.

"december 21st," kageyama repeated, louder this time, though still through gritted teeth that were chattering from the cold.

hinata froze. "but today's the 18th. that's in like two days!"

"yep," said kageyama, shrugging and ignoring hinata's bewilderment.

"w-why didn't you tell me before?" hinata wondered, quickening his pace to catch up with kageyama.

"when was i supposed to tell you?" said kageyama irritably. "when we're practicing volleyball? 'hey hinata, nice receive there, by the way, my birthday's this friday if you wanted to know'?"

"i guess," mumbled hinata, chewing his lip. "it just feels like something you'd mention... before the two days before."

"it's not a big deal," kageyama insisted, shoving his hands into his pockets as he kicked at the ground.

"of course it's a big deal, it's your birthday," said hinata bluntly. "so i'm learning of this a little late, but we're still gonna do something."

kageyama turned to hinata as they reached the intersection where they usually separated. "hinata, you really don't have to -"

"but i will," hinata said sharply. "i'll see you tomorrow, and i'll have a plan!"

if hinata was being honest, he and kageyama weren't the best of friends. he wasn't even sure they could be called friends. they just had a very intense, intimate relationship that surpassed friendship - they were more like people who couldn't stand being around each other, yet also were never apart. hinata wasn't sure what that meant, but he knew that he'd feel weird if he just passed by kageyama's birthday without doing anything. he always did things for his friends' birthdays, he always went all out, and this didn't seem any different.

so the moment hinata got home that day, he began planning for a celebration, telling all his teammates, and figuring out what to give kageyama as a present. the problem was that hinata and kageyama's relationship was mostly a volleyball relationship. hinata didn't know much about kageyama's interests apart from volleyball (if there were such things), and he'd really only known kageyama for a year, so it was hard to guess, especially when his birthday was two days away. the only thing hinata could think of doing was asking someone who knew kageyama bit better than he did.

he assumed that riding down the path to aoba johsai in the morning would help him run into one of kageyama's old friends, and surprisingly, it worked. hinata slowed his bike down as he rode down next to the sidewalk where he'd spotted the easily recognizable spiky hair of someone he only knew as turnip-head. hinata wracked his brains to remember his name before they began talking, but he was coming up empty, so he just said -
