summertime is meant to fall in love, i could fall asleep and stare in your eyes.

"she broke up with you over text?" asked kageyama incredulously, kicking at the ground as he and hinata were making their way over to the sakanoshita store. "that's dumb."

"tell me about it," hinata agreed bitterly, shaking his head and standing up on his bike to pedal harder. "but we've been iffy ever since we - you know - lost..."

"yeah," said kageyama hastily, because neither of them wanted to talk about nationals at that moment. "but what's really dumb is that you got a girlfriend and lost her before i've even had my first kiss yet."

hinata laughed, skidding to halt and climbing off his bike once he and kageyama reached the store. "well, if it makes you feel any better, me and her never kissed, not really."

apparently, that did make kageyama feel a lot better, as his face brightened considerably while he and hinata walked into the store, and hinata shoved him.

"you're so annoying," he scoffed, rolling his eyes. "you never even liked her, did you?"

"no, i hated her," said kageyama bluntly as he walked along the candy aisle and hinata tried to think of some kind of retort, but he was so astonished by kageyama's honesty that he was coming up empty.

"you two coming back from school gym?" coach ukai asked, setting his cigarette down after hinata and kageyama had gotten their respective snacks and walked up to the counter.

"yeah, we thought we'd get some practice in since today's the last day it's open," hinata answered sadly as coach ukai scanned their stuff.

"a whole summer without volleyball is gonna feel weird," kageyama added and hinata nodded in agreement.

"you two are getting older, though, you should find some interests apart from volleyball," said coach ukai, chuckling. "alright, that'll be 520 yen."

hinata and kageyama both looked at each other expectantly, saying, "pay up."

"okay, what's going on here, lover's quarrel?" asked coach ukai playfully as the two boys glared at each other, ignoring him. "come on, aren't boyfriends supposed to pay for each other? i don't really know how it works when there's two guys, but... what?"

his voice trailed off as hinata and kageyama both stared at him, shocked.

"ukai sensei, you don't really think... that me and kageyama are... dating, right?" asked hinata, horrified.

coach ukai glanced between the two of them, raising his eyebrows. "oh, uh... kind of, i guess?"

hinata blinked in astonishment as kageyama rubbed the bridge of his nose, both of their faces heated in embarrassment. hinata should've guess coach ukai thought that way, since he was constantly referring to him and kageyama as 'lovebirds' and their fights as lover's quarrels, but he'd always thought those were jokes, and never minded them too much.

"so... why not?" asked coach ukai, taking a long drag from his cigarette once his apparent shame at the wrong assumption had subsided.

"why not what?"

"why aren't you two together?"

hinata and kageyama were silent, taken aback by the question.

"well, i - we - we're both boys, first of all," said hinata, laughing nervously.

"i never got the impression kageyama was all that interested in women," said coach ukai thoughtfully, putting a thumb to his chin, and kageyama blushed.
