tender is the night for a broken heart.

kageyama remembered the day it started. he had been with hinata when it happened, and every day afterwards he would look back and wonder if there was something he could've done to stop it from happening. then again, even if he had, the result would still be the same.

kageyama and hinata were walking to volleyball practice from their last class, when a girl approached them. kageyama had seen her around before, though he didn't quite know her name. however, it seemed that she and hinata were on a first name basis, and hinata looked quite happy to see her - though hinata was happy to see anyone that was happy to see him.

"shoyo kun," the girl said, blushing profusely and refusing to meet hinata's eyes. "um - i heard that you were having trouble in math class, and um - i wanted to help! if that's okay," she added tentatively, seeming tongue-tied in front of hinata.

hinata gave her a million dollar smile, one that made kageyama's stomach do flip flops even though it wasn't for him, and said, "sure, kumi, i'd love to! and - thank you." surprisingly, hinata was blushing, too. kageyama had never seen him blush before, not like that, not because he was nervous around someone.

the girl - kumi - gave hinata a curt smile, her eyes lighting up, before she whirled around and ran off. hinata smiled in her direction for a moment and then turned back to continue walking with kageyama.

"can't you ask yachi to tutor you?" kageyama couldn't help asking.

"yeah, but you can't just turn down a woman when she's asking you if she can be your tutor," replied hinata matter-of-factly. "don't you know anything?"

kageyama muttered an insult at hinata under his breath, though hinata was right - kageyama didn't really know much about girls. this was the one thing that hinata one-upped kageyama at. he had always been much better with girls, but for some reason, kageyama was the one that got the most confessions, something tanaka and noya were quick to notice, and hinata was quick to make fun of him for. there seemed to be something about hinata that made girls think of him as a friend instead of something more, which kageyama couldn't say he hated. he did believe that more girls should like hinata than liked kageyama, but he was glad there weren't.

it meant that kageyama alone knew of hinata's special nature, the cute expression on his face when he was telling kageyama something that'd make his heart flutter, or the gleam in his eyes when he got really into a game, or the glow on his face when he saw someone doing a really challenging move. if no one else was falling for hinata, it meant that kageyama was the one that noticed these things, and kageyama was happy with that - because he really did notice it all.

but as it turned out, kageyama had more reason to be afraid of kumi than he'd thought. for one thing, she was a really good teacher - hinata was getting better and better at math very quickly, progressing way past kageyama's level. but another thing, something that constantly tugged at kageyama's heart, twisting his stomach into knots, was that even though kageyama needed the math help, too, hinata did not ever invite kageyama along with him to be tutored by kumi. it may have been because kumi could only handle one student, but it was strange that hinata didn't even ask, or explain why he wasn't asking. but there was none of that. he just never asked.

if he had, kageyama would have definitely agreed. not only because he sincerely needed the math help, but because he was starting to get suspicious of kumi. he'd only seen the girl interact with hinata once, the first time, but after nights of analysis (and probably over-analysis), kageyama came to the conclusion that their conversation had been... suspicious to say the least. not the things they were saying, but how they were saying, the way their faces looked slightly flushed around each other. now that kageyama thought about it, hinata did seem to blush a lot whenever kumi was mentioned, and not in the normal way kageyama had seen him blush when he was embarrassed over normal things - this was a different kind of blush. kageyama knew because he'd been the one to wear most of the time, and it'd been the blush kageyama wished hinata would have when looking at him.
