Alexander was right, we didn't have time to sit and talk about our old flames while the world was ending outside. So, we left. Jacqueline was waiting for us outside, and we all got inside the same car Alexander always had ready to pick us up.
"So, what's the plan?" I asked once we were inside the spacious car. Dennis was sitting next to me and he had his hand on my knee. I could feel how scared he was, but I tried not to think about it.
"Well," Alexander took a deep breath and put his hands together as he rested his elbows on his knees and he leaned towards me. He was sitting in front of me, wearing a black shirt that had the first couple of buttons unbuttoned and that allowed part of his chest to show, a silvery blazer and black pants. It was like he loved to get the attention women always gave him. "first of all, as soon as we step out of this car you're going to keep your mouth shut." I frowned. "Then, once we find Darko, the three of us plus the other vampires from The Academy are going to fight him, and you're going to stay put until I say so." I felt a weight lift off Dennis' shoulders, and I gave Alexander an offended look.
"I thought I was here to help." I said. Alexander sat straight and he ran his hand through his silky dark blonde hair, like he was exasperated.
"You are, but just in case we need you. I don't want to risk your life until I'm sure there is no other option." he said, and Jacqueline rolled her eyes.
"How sweet." she said in an ironic tone. I was inclined to believe Alexander was so protecting of me only because of how valuable I was, and not for any other personal reasons.
"And how are we going to find Darko?" Dennis asked, uncomfortably changing the subject.
"River, he's a member of The Academy and he was turned by Darko. He'll know where he is." Jacqueline responded after she realized Alexander wasn't going to be the one to do it.
The constant back and forth between them seemed almost childish at this point. It was like they both hated each other but they just had to suck it up because now they had a common goal for the first time in probably forever, and the tension around us was an indicative of that. It amazed me to know now that part of the reason was a woman. I had suspected it, but now I was sure. Mary Louse must've been more than just astonishingly beautiful to make not only Dennis, but Alexander fall in love with her. I wasn't sure what the situation was, but I could tell they were both hurt. I could tell Dennis was hurt by her because I could feel him, and Alexander because I could see it in his eyes. Mary Louise. Her name couldn't stop ringing in my head ever since I first read it, but I had to push it away to focus on the pending problem; war.
"We're here." Alexander's voice forced me to go back to reality.
We stepped out of the car and I realized I recognized the place. It was Roselotte's Bar, the place I had come to with Harry. The place gave me a bad feeling, I didn't know if it was because of the bad memories, or because I sensed something else. It felt like... there was a lot of evil inside it, but I couldn't put my finger on it. Once we walked inside I realised where the feeling came from. The place was full of vampires. There were at least thirty vampires, and they all turned to us when we walked inside. I recognized a few of them from the time we fought Darko's vampire zombies for the first time, back when we didn't even know where they were coming from and we thought that killing them would solve our problem. Big mistake.
"Who is she?" one of the vampires on the front asked. He was tall with honey-colored hair and hazel eyes. I had never seen him before.
"War makes me hungry." Alexander replied. What? Was he implying I was for him to eat? I gave him a confused look.
"Can we have a taste? She feels amazing." a blonde shorter vampire emerged from the crowd and asked. I swallowed nervously. I felt Dennis tense up and like he was about to do something, but I calmed him down through our bond. Alexander wasn't going to let her eat me, right?
