AVELINA GOT OUT of her bed. She could just feel the extra puff of her eyes from crying all night. It had already been two days, and her nights were still spent with more tears than sleep.
Her stomach began to growl, alerting her of the loss of food she was currently sporting. Trudging to her kitchen, she pulled open her refrigerator only to see that all of her food was expired. A sour smell hit her nose leaving her to quickly shut it.
Avelina decided to just make some coffee since food wasn't an option. She would have headed off to the grocery store to get some food, but her body wasn't allowing it. All she wanted to do was lay down, and drown in her own tears. Hopelessness and despair were becoming her friends.
A notification popped up on her phone. She quickly reached for it before realizing that it was just some spam email. The small boost of happiness she received had been replaced with major disappointment.
She was beginning to walk back to her bed when she heard knocking on the door. Avelina walked over to it while the cat sauntered right along with her. Pulling open the door, Avelina was faced with no one other than Vincent.
"Can we talk now?" Vincent questioned.
Avelina moved out of the way so he could enter. She was still very cautious of him and made sure to be on the lookout for his every movement. The moment he was inside, she shut the door behind him.
The cat paraded over to him where she rubbed her body up against him.
"You have a cat?" Vincent asked, reaching down and picking up the little creature who purred within his arms.
"Kind of."
"I wanted to explain everything to you. It feels like you've already formed a dislike for me which is understandable. I haven't always been around, but there is a reason behind that," he began. Avelina sat down on her couch and awaited his words. She was ready to be handed a bunch of lies, never knowing who or what to believe.
"I want to hear the whole story. Starting from the beginning with no lies are secrets. You have no idea how tired I am of being left out in the dark," she told him, her voice cracking as she thought about Adrik. Avelina had to shake away her thoughts just to keep from crying.
"Okay," he agreed. "I first decided to leave home when you turned two. I had just turned sixteen, and I was introduced to some things back in the favela's that I shouldn't have been introduced to."
Avelina began to think back to the Favelas. Life was hard there. It was so full of negativity that the cops stopped caring. She used to wish that she lived on the better side of Brazil where beauty took its form.
