Christopher and I went to his parent'shouse for a little bit after school. Things between us were tense because he believeda rumor that was spread about me. Wewere arguing when we entered the house. Ispotted Lyn at the kitchen table doing herhomework, what a dweeb. I wondered intothe pantry to fetch the jar of peanut butterthen grabbed a spoon. I lost focus whilearguing and dropped the jar on my foot."Look what you made me do!" Iagonized, rubbing my foot."Well, maybe if you hadn't lied aboutsleeping with John, you wouldn't have abruised foot!" Christopher yelled back. Istopped rubbing my foot and ran to him, slapping him, punching him, kicking him. Hejust held me. He held me in his arms and letme beat on him."Get your hands off my son!"Christopher's dad yelled. Lyn sat therewatching us like a movie. I glared at her, knowing in my heart that she was thesource behind the rumor. Their dadseparated me from Christopher and made us sit on the sofa. We were at oppositeends. I folded my arms."Tell me LeighAnn, what happened?"Christopher's dad was surprisingly calm. This is ridiculous though. I'm not a damnbaby. I huffed and shook my head, lettinghim know I wasn't spilling. Christopherrolled his eyes then confessed."I heard a rumor about her and wasdumb enough to believe it.""A rumor that Lyn started!" I blurted, standing up and pointing into the kitchen."I did not!" Lyn peaked her headaround the corner. From that moment, wewere all going bonkers, spitting at eachother like a bunch of camels. I felt like wewere screaming for hours. I could feel theburn in my throat when were finallyinterrupted by a knock at the door.Christopher's dad made a gesture for us tosit down and shut up. I glanced over andsaw a navy blue uniform. Somebody hadcalled the cops. Christopher's dad closed the door. I got up and approached it,holding my ear against the wood."I received a call about a publicdisturbance. Can you tell me a little aboutwhat's going on?""It's my son. His girlfriend was hittinghim, something about a rumor." He told onme. How dare him! I have come the officialconclusion that I hate Christopher's dad! Heshould have lied for me but instead turnedme in, how rude!I heard the door start to open anddarted back over to the couch.Christopher's dad and the officer walked inand asked to speak with Christopher. Thethree of them went back outside and Ieavesdropped again. The officer askedChristopher if he wanted to press assaultcharges against me."No, sir." He answered. That's my boy.I knew he'd cover for me. The officerfinished the talk and then everyone wasinside. Lyn had disappeared into her bedroom. Christopher's dad was watchingthe window, waiting for the officer to pulloff. Christopher was hugging me until hisdad turned to face us; he was the one withfolded arms this time. We had a staringcontest until he spoke."Get out," he yelled. "I do not wantto see that girl in my house anymore!"Another argument broke out between thetwo of them. I left to go sit in the pathfinder.Seconds later, Christopher walked out witha pile of his items. We drove to theapartment, and this was the official day westarted to live on our own, me, at agesixteen, him, at age seventeen.Living together was both a dream anda nightmare. I adored having him next tome every night except for when he snored. However, we did argue a lot more. Healways wanted to hang out with his family, but I protested, and made plans with myfamily instead. I couldn't standChristopher's family. His dad is an ignorant prick and Lyn whined about everything. Theonly person I actually liked was his mom,and even she got on my everlasting nervesometimes.Even though I enjoyed only beingwith my own family, I relied onChristopher's mom for everything. She tookme too and from places I needed, to buygroceries, and she even invited me on hershopping sprees with Lyn, well, more like letme come, I usually invited myself. I wouldtalk to her about almost everything. Attimes, I even tried to conversate with Lyn,but she replied with one word answers thenwent back to having a stupid, depressedlook on her face. The only time she wouldsay more than one word to me was whenshe thought she was correcting me. Iignored her when she did this, not wantingto egg her on.I texted Christopher and complainedto him about Lyn, sounding as butt hurt as Icould. "She just hates me. Ihave tried hard, and she'shaving none of it." He told mehe'd talk to her and I hoped he do it quickly.Lyn treating me like garbage upset mebecause I didn't deserve this, I'm nothingbut a peach to her. Lyn got even more upsetif her mom tried talking to her about me.Christopher showed me themessages between them. He had said thatshe needed to start treating me better, Lyngave a two word response: "Oh, Okay."Oh, Okay? What the hell is that supposed tomean? I decided to stoop to her level ofpettiness and typed a lengthy message:"Okay, look. I don't knowwhy you are so mean to me. Iam trying my darnest to treatyou like another sister butits damn near impossiblebecause you're ugly. You'vegot a horrible attitude andare always talking down toothers. If that makes you any version of a good person, then God strike me dead! Goodfreaking grief, I feel awfulknowing that you'reChristopher's sister. You'rechildish and need to stopharassing others; it looksreally bad for your alreadypoor reputation." I hit 'send' andawaited a response. Ten minutes later, itcame, and too my surprise, it was muchlonger than two words."Please LeighAnn, by allmeans tell me how you've beentreating me like a sister? You got the cops called on us,forced my brother, my hero,to move out a year beforeit's legal, you don't evenlet me hang out with mybrother. Most of all, pleasetell me why I should nice toyou when you stooped so lowas to make everybody believeI copied your entire essay-"I stopped reading at that part. I can't believeit, she knows the truth.
