Katie's pov.
Travis looks around nervously and sits down on the floor. "hey, I'm sorry, you don't have to talk about it if you don't want to." I tell him, trying to comfort him. "no, it's okay, I should tell you." He says his voice a little shaky. "It happened a couple days before Conner and I got to camp." He starts. "My mom, she uh, was drunk...like usual. She started throwing things around the house and breaking things and cursing Hermes. She yelled about things we didn't understand yet, about the gods, camp, and monsters. And of course, the more you really know about who you really are, the more monsters you attract. We were fine the first few attacks after we ran away because we were quick and really lucky. But the last one we couldn't escape. A hellhound trapped us in an alleyway and..." He shudders and I take his hand. "Is that why you don't like Mrs. O'Leary?" I ask and he nods. "Beckendorf found us then, he was on his way to camp too, and helped us. My cut ended up getting infected though, and I had to spend a few days in the infermatory..." I lean my head on his shoulder and he does the same. "what happened to your mom?" "I have no clue. I haven't been back since." I know better than to say anything else; I know how annoying and meaningless those "I'm so sorry Katie" or the, "It'll be okay." So we sit there, hand in hand, until the lunch bell.
