Washington's POV

The sun has barely risen and I hear a gunshot. I scramble to find my bayonet before I hear, "Lee, do you yield!?" Goddammit! What part of, "Don't do a thing" does Alexandra not understand?

"You shot him in the side. Yes, he yields!" I hear Burr's voice reply.

"I'm satisfied!" Laurens retorts.

I march to the field where the dispute is taking place.

"We've gotta clear the field!" Burr shouts.

"Go! We won." Alex's voice again.

"Here comes the general!" A few witnesses exclaim.

"This should be fun." Burr sighs.

"What is the meaning of this!?" I demand. Lee is clutching his side while Hamilton and Laurens are huddled together, not bothering to check the damage they've caused. "Mr. Burr, get a medic for the General!"

Burr and the medic frantically tend to the wound in Lee's side. "Lee, you will never agree with me, but believe me. These young soldiers don't speak for me." They place him on a stretcher and take him away. "Thank you for your service."

"Let's ride." Burr says before dashing off on his horse.

"Hamilton!" I shout.

"Sir!"

"Meet me inside." I do my best to contain my fury.

"Meet him inside. Meet him inside." Some of the others taunt.

I let out a deep sigh before speaking. "Kid,"

"Don't call me kid." She says back.

"This war is hard enough without infighting." I try to explain.

"Lee called you out. We called his bluff." She interrupts.

"You solved nothing. You aggravate our allies to the South."

"You're absolutely right. Joan should have shot him in the mouth. That would've shut him up." She's really trying my patience.

"Kid,"

"I'm not your kid." Shut up and listen for once!

"Watch your tone. I am not a maiden in need of defending. I am grown!"

"Charles Lee, Thomas Conway, these men take your name and they take it through the mud." She shouts.

"My name's been through a lot! I can take it." I know pride and status are important to her, but she's taking things too far.

"Well I don't have your name! I don't have your titles! I don't have your land! But if you-"

"No." I cut her off. I've spoken to the doctors and I'm aware of her condition. I know she's in no state to be in command.

"If you gave me command of a battalion, a group of men to lead, I could fly above my station after the war." She keeps asking, but I have to keep saying no.

"Or you could die! And we need you alive." It should be an obvious reason why.

"I am more than willing to die." Of course she is. But I'm not willing to gamble with her life, let alone both her and her child's life.

"Your husband needs you alive. Kid, I need you ali-"

"CALL ME KID ONE MORE TIME!" She completely loses it.

I observe her. Her skin is pale and her eyes are exhausted. She's clearly miserable; more so than most of the other soldiers. I made a mistake keeping her here. Even if she's not on the battlefield she's in danger. And she's too reckless for her own good. I didn't wanna have to resort to this, but it's for the best.

"Go home, Alexandra." I tell her. She looks up at me with shocked eyes. "That's an order from your commander."

"Sir-"

"Go home!"

She looks as though she's about to cry. But before she can shed a tear she turns around and walks out. As much as I want to call her back, I can't. At least she'll be safe.
