Laurens POV
"I may not live to see our glory,"
"I may not live to see our glory." Hercules and Lafayette sing after me.
"But I've seen wonders great and small."
"I've seen wonders great and small." The two slur their words together. The reception started five minutes ago and they're already wasted.
"'Cause if the queen cat can get married,"
"If Alexandra can get married..." Hercules is ogling at Alex's ring.
"There's hope for our ass after all!" I joke.
"Raise a glass to freedom." Lafayette toasts.
"Something you will never see again." The three of us say to Elijah.
"No matter what she tells you." Hercules warns him, whispering in his ear. Oh poor, sweet, innocent Elijah. He has no idea what he's gotten himself into.
"Let's have another round tonight!" Lafayette suggets. More booze is the last thing he needs, but it's fine.
"Raise a glass to the four of us." I say.
"To the newly not poor of us." Hercules remarks. And he's right. This bitch is rich now!
"We'll tell the story of tonight." Now Lafayette can barely stand. He's not even gonna remember the story of tonight.
"Let's have another round!" You can't blame me. The drinks are free.
Burr's POV
I stroll shyly into the Schuyler mansion. This isn't really my scene. "Well, if it isn't Aaron Burr, sir!" Alexandra gives me a warm greeting. "I didn't think that you would make it."
"To be sure." I reply. As pretty as she is, I still found it hard to believe that a man met her, got to know her, and actually fell in love with her obnoxious personality.
"Burr!" I hear a few voices. Of course she invited these nut jobs she calls friends. Deep breaths, Aaron. I keep telling myself.
"I came to say congratulations."
"Spit a verse, Burr!" Hercules says to me.
"I see the whole gang is here."
"You are the worst, Burr." I take Lafayette's insult with a grain of salt considering he's sprawled on the floor and cradling an empty glass.
"Ignore them." Alexandra says to me. "Congrats to you, Lieutenant Colonel! I wish I had your command instead of manning George's journal."
"No you don't." I say.
"Yes I do." She insists.
"Now, be sensible! From what I hear, you've made yourself indispensable." Washington loves her and her work, not to mention she just married super rich. She's living the high life.
"Well," Joan Laurens puts her arm around me and suggestively mutters in my ear. "Well I heard you've got a special someone on the side, Burr." My heart skips a beat. News sure does travel quickly.
"Is that so?" Alexandra is intrigued, so there's no way I'm escaping this. Then Hercules Mulligan is giggling and making kissing noises. This sucks.
"What're you tryna hide, Burr?" Joan asks.
"I should go." But as I motion towards the door, Alexandra pushes Joan and Hercules away from me.
"No, these guys should go." She shooes them away towards the dining room. "Leave us alone." She looks down at Lafayette on the floor before turning back to me. "It's alright, Burr." Her voice is surprisingly sweet right now and I find it comforting. "I wish you'd brought this girl with you tonight, Burr."
I hang my head, bashful. "You're very kind, but I'm afraid it's unlawful."
"Sir, what do you mean?" She's all ears.
"She's married." I confess.
"I see-"
"She's married to a British officer." I blurt out.
"Oh shit." She says quietly.
"Congrats again, Alexandra." Her big eyes are full of pity. "Smile more." I remind her. "I'll see you on the other side of the war."
I start to walk away and she mutters back to me, "I will never understand you." She's right about that. And the feeling is mutual. "If you love this woman, go get her! What are you waiting for?" That question stops me in my tracks.
I turn back to her one last time. "See you on the other side of the war."
She shrugs. "I'll see you on the other side of the war." She then goes off to find her groom and I leave the estate, feeling lost and depressed.
