Thursday 5 PM

As you leaned against the car door, watching the environment pass by, it seemed all so familiar. It felt as if everything you did in your hometown never happened, or in some distant dream. You started to question your mental state. As your mom slowed to a stop at a traffic light, the rain gently pattered on the windshield and she looked over at you, noticing your somber expression. “You alright honey?” She asked with a soft voice. “I- I’m not sure anymore, it just feels like everything’s gone by so fast. I barely had any time to settle down.” You replied in a confused and saddened tone. “It’ll be alright dear, at least we can put all of that behind us.” You sighed briefly. “I guess.” You watched the lines of the road zoom by as they faded back into the darkness, the lines blurred together in an almost hypnotic way. You looked towards the sky, pitch black clouds stretched for miles with no trace of the moon, blocked by darkness. You looked to the road ahead, trying to find something to distract you from your thoughts. The car turned into a parking lot, you looked over at the hotel, it seemed okay from the outside, just like any other. It was a small town, at least not too busy, like the one in the book you’d been reading, Diana Faust had driven hundreds of miles to see the man who had saved her life, who had been stabbed in his abdomen in a desperate attempt to protect her from the aggressor. Luckily, the cops had arrived just in time to arrest the assailant. You wondered how Diana did it, how she just decided she was going to drive hundreds of miles just to see him. She must have been deeply in love with him.

As you and your mom checked into the hotel you couldn’t stop thinking about the novel, why would John feel so compelled to protect her even when he knew he could get hurt. You’re just tired, you need to sleep, maybe it would be for the best just to forget about everything.

Two Years Later

It had been roughly two and a half years since you had moved back to California, you were now eighteen and out of school, unsure what you wanted to do with your life. As you drove down the street in your car, which was given to you last year as a birthday present from your mom, you took a deep, relaxing breath, all of your stress melting away, you hadn’t thought about your hometown in over 5 months. You wondered how Lily and the others were doing, you had hoped Tyler had forgotten about you by now, but that wasn’t something you had to worry about now. You parked the car in front of the store, making sure to lock it as the car honked, as if wishing. You walked inside and grabbed a shopping cart as soon as you stepped inside, soon wandering off to the bakery corner of the store, it was a very special day and you wanted to make sure it went perfectly, your mother’s birthday. You searched the table, twiddling your fingers in search of something specific, your eyes lit up slightly when you found what you were looking for as you picked out her favorite cake, gently placing it in the shopping cart as if it was a newborn baby. Casually strolling over to the cards aisle, you let your eyes roam freely over the variety of colored cards ranging from ‘happy birthday!’ to ‘Hope you recover!’. You picked out an empty card, ideas filling your head as to what to write on it. You felt like you knew exactly what to put on it. After you picked up a few more things and checked out, you made your way to your car and started to put the groceries away in the trunk, strategically placing the cake in between everything so it wouldn’t get smushed. Once everything was in it’s proper place you closed the trunk and walked over to the driver’s side, as you quickly checked your receipt to make sure you had everything and were about to get into the car, you heard an argument behind you. You turned your body halfway and turned your head the rest of the way to look at a young couple arguing, the girl seemed rather distressed as the man yelled at her rather aggressively, you felt a bit uncomfortable so you got into the car, put on your seatbelt, turned it on and drove off.

As you pulled into the driveway you looked at your house, it was a modest home, two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a decent kitchen with a medium-sized living room and a lovely backyard. You grabbed everything you could, saving the cake for last, as you carried the groceries in like a boss. Suddenly a fluffy blur bolted down the stairs, cantering over to greet you, it was Suka, your two month old German shepherd. Your mom had gotten her last year for your birthday. “Hi baby girl!” You squeaked in a baby-voice, the pup wagged her tail excitedly, her ears flopping against her head as she bounced up and down. You put the other groceries on the table as you went back out to the car to grab the cake, making sure to leave the grocery bag on it so your mom can’t peek at it. Once you locked the door behind you, you put the cake in the fridge where your mom wouldn’t find it, then you proceeded to take your shoes off and put them away neatly where Suka wouldn’t chew on them.

7:15 PM

After dinner, you walked to the kitchen to get the cake ready, putting some final touches onto it with your own artistic flair, delicately placing the candles on top, you could hardly believe your mom was 38, she was rather young for a mother, most of the parents you had met were in their 40s or 50s, but your mother had met your father at a young age, and they had sparked a passionate love for each other rather quickly. You turned the dining room light off and lit the candles, carefully walking over to the table. “Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday dear Mom, happy birthday to you!” You chirped melodically, your mom smiled warmly, the embers of the candles reflecting in her copper-colored eyes. As she blew the candles out you clapped, encouraging her to give you a tight hug which you accepted gratefully. “Thank you honey, this means a lot to me.” “It’s the least I could do for you, mom.” As you let go, you and your mom enjoyed the cake. After you were full, you gave your mom a kiss and headed to bed.

10 AM

As you rolled over in bed, your hand rested on something soft and fluffy. You lazily opened your eyes and looked what it was, Suka laid next to you, sprawled out like a lion in the savannah sun. “Good morning silly girl.” You whispered quietly, the pup’s eyes lighting up as she shot into an upright position and started licking your nose, her little tail wagging sporadically. You sat up and slid off the bed, Suka following shortly after. You sleepily walked down the stairs, the pup fumbling down them closely behind you like a baby duck. You walked to the kitchen and gave Suka her breakfast, and you got yours. As you sat on the porch sipping on coffee, a few cars drove by every now and then, you thought nothing of it. Suka sat next to you, chewing on one of her favorite toys. You noticed a dark blue Ferrari drive by rather slowly, it gave you a bad feeling, even Suka seemed on edge, she jumped up from chewing her toy and barked, louder than usual. You jumped a little, surprised at how loud she was, she wasn’t usually aggressive towards other people since she was such a sweet dog, but this was unexpected. You picked up the young shepherd and stood up, petting her slowly. “It’s alright Sooks, you’re ok.” You comforted her, all the while watching the car drive by, it reminded you of Tyler’s car, or his dad’s car. You felt a little on edge so you put Suka down as you opened the front door. “Come on Suka, let’s go inside.” You called to her, standing in the doorway holding the door open, she grabbed her toy and cantered inside, her tail bouncing about, you took one last look around the street before you closed the door, there’s no way he could have followed you.. Could he?

2 months later, August 15th 12:28 AM

As you walked down the sidewalk with Suka on lead, you snuggled into your coat, the fall breeze getting a little too nippy for your liking, you and Suka jogged home, setting your mind on some hot chocolate and warm AC. Closing the door and the wind behind you, you sighed as you took Suka off the lead, running off to find the closest toy to terrorize. You slipped your coat off and hung it on the coat hanger. “Mom i’m home.” You shouted as you slipped out of your shoes and into the kitchen to make yourself some hot chocolate. “Hey Sooks, want some lunch?” You asked the pup, her attention turned to you, her tail wagging gently.

Setting down Suka’s food bowl, you walked to the living room where you’d hoped to find your mom, but only saw a mess, the pillows were on the floor, and the blankets that were usually sprawled on the couch trailed to the back door. You started to feel uneasy. “Mom?” You called out, a little more panicked. You set your hot chocolate on the coffee table as you quickly made your way to the back door, as soon as you opened it you saw her lying in the grass, you nearly screamed. “MOM!!” You ran to her, Suka behind you with the same concern. She was laying next to the fence, bruised and beaten, as you crouched next to her you could feel the rage surging, the first thought you had was to find the person responsible for this. “Mom! What happened?” You carefully propped her up against the fence, she was barely conscious. “Ih.. he.. I..” She muttered quietly. “Was it a man?” You asked, she nodded gently. “Come on, let’s get you inside.” You helped her up, and took her inside, you watched her carefully the rest of the day.
