Rifles aloud in my ear,
Mortars screaming in the sky,
I grip my rifle in sweating hands,
My thoughts rushing to you,
I told you I loved you,
Before I was taken from you,
Now me and my brothers,
Fighting strong, to be home for New Years,
The fallen never knowing their lovers smiles,
As we pushed on for you,
Holding onto happy memories,
Our will to live fuelled by love and hate,
Our hate for the enemy,
Burning rage fiercer than any fire,
Love brighter than any star,
Love for you,
But when war takes a nasty turn,
And strikes me down,
I do not scream for my mother,
I scream for you,
I call your caring hands one last time,
But medics can't help me now,
I'm on my own, wanting to stay alive,
But my screams fill the empty fields,
'Till the morphine takes the pain away,
I now leave this hell hole,
Never being happy with you,
You moved on quickly,
You were forever happy,
I told you once,
I'll tell you again,
Even though I'm at war,
And ANZAC legends say it's horrid,
One thing will never change,
Those are my feelings for the enemy,
Hatred burning like fire,
And my feelings for you.
My love for you.
A short poem to recognise the horros of War, and even though the ANZAC legends don't talk about the hardships of war, things are always ugly on the battlefield.
