The fire in the Gryffindor Common Room was still lively crackling and illuminating the room even at the earliest hours in the morning. As a result of their mini dance-off, James had left the Common Room at about two in the morning his mind hazing with flashes of Sapphire's bright hair and illuminating smile. James couldn't really pinpoint what made him so infatuated with Lily's cousin, he wasn't even sure if the word "infatuated" was the correct term to describe what he was feeling. He only knew that she had him hooked somehow and that he liked being around her. He liked being around her when she was happy because her smile shined through the room and her laugh was like music to his ears. James wasn't exactly in love, as per se, but he did feel some friendly attraction to Sapphire. Well, at least he thought.
James put his hand on the pale grey walls leading to the boys' dormitories in order to avoid falling. He cursed himself for forgetting his wand on his bed. James slowly crept his way into his room, being extremely careful not to wake up Sirius or Remus. He wasn't worried about waking Peter up; the boy could sleep through a war. He thanked Merlin when he entered the room and everyone seemed to be asleep, only one dim light coming from Remus' bed. James took off his shirt and lay down in bed his breath hitching in his throat when the bed made a creaking noise.
Suddenly, the light coming from Remus' side got stronger and the red curtain hiding the brown-haired boy opened. Remus was propped up on his pillows, a book in his hand, and a bored expression on his features.
"Where were you?" asked Remus, his eyes never leaving the pages of his book.
James hesitated for a moment, not knowing what to respond. Instead, he looked at Remus with the expression of a deer caught in headlights, "What?"
Remus raised an eyebrow, a coy smile on his lips as he finally tore his gaze from his book, "I asked you of your whereabouts, James. What were you doing this late?"
"I..." said James, his mind reeling to come up with a believable reason as to why he wasn't there on time.
"We heard laughs and music coming from the Common Room," James jumped up at the sound of Sirius ' voice; he didn't know Sirius was awake Sirius was laying messily on his bed, in some sort of fallen fort of sheets. His slightly too long black hair was a mess on top of his head and his eyes were drooping. "Did Lily finally say yes to your numerous marriage proposals?"
Lily. A mental picture of Lily smiling swam through James's mind and he suddenly felt guilty. He completely forgot about Lily while he was dancing with her cousin! Lily would surely feel devastated! But what if she doesn't? What if Lily is actually delighted that James had finally moved on from her? James' heart dropped to his stomach when he thought that Lily would be happier without him. Maybe he was just a burden to her.
"Okay, we'll cut to the chase," said Remus, slamming his book together and sitting up properly. "We know you were down there with Lily's cousin, we saw you two. You don't have to make up excuses."
"I honestly think your plan is amazing, Prongs," said Sirius, his hand flying up to his hair.
"Plan, what plan?"
"Going out with Lily's cousin to make her jealous, obviously," said Sirius, smirking proudly at James.
"Isn't that your plan?"
"I..." James thought about it for a while. What Sirius suggested didn't seem so bad. Maybe he was right, maybe all Lily needed to finally accept her feelings for James was a little jealousy... but with her cousin? Wasn't that taking things a little too far, even for the Marauders? On the other hand, though, it may be a great idea. James pondered the thought for a few seconds until an uneasy smirk appeared on his features.
