"Are you sure I have to do this?" I asked, the annoyance clear in my voice.
"Just go. He's a nice guy," Lina replied from the other end of the line. "You'll like him."
I rolled my eyes at her words. This is the fourth blind date she has set me up on in the last three weeks. None of the others have ever worked out. One spent the entire date talking about his obsession with anime. When I said I didn't really watch anime, he stomped out of the restaurant leaving me to pay the check. I don't know why she thought this one would be any different. "Why do you keep trying to set me up with these guys knowing full well it's never good?"
Lina laughed. "He asked about you. I swear I didn't approach him this time," she said.
"Huh? This wasn't your idea?" I questioned. Hmmm this is new I thought to myself. This actually might work out in my favor.
"No. He approached me after class. He asked me who you were and if I thought you might be interested in him," Lina replied.
I sighed in frustration. "Fine," I blurted out before I could stop myself. "But this is the last time, Lina. I mean it."
Lina laughed again, the sound coming out bright and cheery. "Okay. Okay. No more blind dates," she promised.
"Where and when am I meeting him?" I asked, already done with the date and it hadn't even started yet.
"Tomorrow at 2 at that little coffee shop down the street from the university – Serenity," Lina responded.
"At least he picked a nice spot. I heard that place is really good," I said, a small smile on my face, thinking of the cute little coffee shop with the pastel awnings above the doors and windows.
"It's going to be fine," Lina said in response. "Don't worry about it. You never know. You might really like this one."
I rolled my eyes again. "Yeah yeah. Not holding out much hope for this one, but I'll go since he asked," I replied before ending the call.
As I got ready for bed, I thought back to the last serious relationship I had. It was my first year in college. Chase was a 2nd year design student and absolutely dazzled me. The way his dark hair fell over his eyes was captivating. We fell into the relationship quickly and into bed even quicker. He had a way with words and was able to charm me out of my clothes before I had a chance to think about rejecting him. I fell in love with him and thought we were destined to be together. However, destiny being the bitch that she is, had other plans in mind. While I was thinking about a future with him, he had another girl in his bed and on his mind. The day I found out he was cheating on me, it broke me. Not just my heart, but my spirit.
Lina had been my sounding block and was sympathetic to my plight and held my hand as I drowned my sorrows in mint chocolate chip ice cream and Doritos. After a week of tears and desperation, I pulled myself out of the funk and threw myself into my studies. With two months, Chase ended the relationship with the girl and came crawling back to me, begging me to forgive him. I knew better. Once a cheater, always a cheater. I still saw him occasionally around the university, but usually steered clear. When I would catch his glance, he would give me the puppy dog eyes that always got him what he wanted. I, however, had grown up. I wasn't falling for it again.
I went to sleep that night, thinking about what Lina had said. This was the first time a guy had approached her about wanting to set up a date with me. Usually it was Lina trying to set them up and miserably failing. Although I would have preferred him to approach me on his own, this gave me a little hope for the date to be semi successful.
