Recap
What comes from my mouth next makes me want to punch myself in the face. "How would you like for Mister Alexius to spend Christmas here with us?"
Eliza's pov.
Hearing that, both kids start screaming their heads off while nodding yes. What have I done? Why can't I shut my damn mouth? I swear when I open my mouth I don't know what comes out of it. Maybe it's not going to be that bad. Who am I kidding? It's only going to be worse! "Okay, it's bedtime now!" Clapping my hands together, I get up picking Calista up. "But Miss Eliza? No sleep now! I want to play with Mister!" Extending my hand out for him to take, I shake my head. "It's way past your bedtime. You need to sleep to have enough energy for all the activities that we're going to do tomorrow. Besides, Mister will be here by the time you wake up. Ask him yourself" I motion to the amused Alexius, sitting next to Christian. I guess he's loving the fact that the kids warmed up to him so quickly. Me on the other hand, it definitely scares me. It will only make it easier for him to separate us!
"Don't worry, I promise to still be here tomorrow." Nodding his head, Christian takes my outstretched hand only to be stopped by the now standing Alexius. "Let me." Nodding my head, I lead him down the beige now filled with Christmas lights hallway, and to the beige colored bedroom that they previously shared. "Ms. Eliza? Can you sing us a song?" Christian says while we're putting them on the bed and covering them with the blankets. The question didn't really catch me off guard because It has become our thing from the first few months that they started living in the orphanage. It started when I came across a wide-awake Christian roaming the house late at night. Turns out he couldn't sleep and at that point, he hadn't warmed up to us yet so he didn't feel comfortable telling us. From that day onwards, I go to his bedroom and sing him to sleep and I sometimes go to Calista's room that's if she's still awake. "Of course baby! You want your favorite?" Nodding, he gets settled and waits for me to start singing. "If you want, you can go to the living room. I'll be down after they're asleep." Thinking he has left since I don't hear a reply, I start my song.
Loving can hurt, loving can hurt sometimes
But it's the only thing that I know
When it gets hard, you know it can get hard sometimes
It is the only thing that makes us feel aliveWe keep this love in a photograph
We made these memories for ourselves
Where our eyes are never closing
Hearts are never broken
And time's forever frozen stillSo you can keep me inside the pocket of your ripped jeans
Holding me closer 'til our eyes meet
You won't ever be alone, wait for me to come homeAnd if you hurt me
That's okay baby, only words bleed
Inside these pages you just hold me
And I won't ever let you go
Wait for me to come home"Calista has already fallen asleep but Christian is still awake while looking at me mesmerized. No matter how many times he has heard me sing, he still gets taken aback by my voice. He loves it and can't fall asleep without me singing to him. I don't know if that was something their mother used to do or if it's just giving him the feeling of how it would be like if he had a mother present in his life, and I don't dare to ask afraid that he will keep to himself again.
"Loving can heal
Loving can mend your soul
And it's the only thing that I know
I swear it will get easier
Remember that with every piece of ya
And it's the only thing we take with us when we die"While continuing with my singing I heard a noise from behind me. Turning around I see Alexius standing there staring at us with soft eyes so I finish my song staring right into his eyes. Feeling my cheeks wet I figure that I cried again. Songs like this always make me closer. It's both the melody and the lyrics. Especially the lyrics, they're so meaningful and the message is so amazing. My purpose since then the first time I sang this song was for them to know that even if anything happens, I'll still be with them in the memories. I think that they understood that from the first time and that's why it's their favorite one. Seeing Christian asleep, I turn the lights off and turn on the night light.
While out of the room, I turn to him only to see him gazing at me with a caring look. "You really love them, don't you?" Nodding my head and a smile taking over my face, I say. "What's there not to love? They're the purest and kindest souls. You need to be a fool not to love them!" "That was exactly why I decided to adopt them. They reminded me a lot of myself when I was younger." I have a strong feeling that there's more to him than he lets on and I have an urge to find what that is. But, hearing him speak like that and just spending time with him, even if it was little, I see a difference. He's not that rude, cold, heartless man that he wants everyone to think he is. I know from my dad that you should be that way to make it to the top but not to this extreme! "You know, you are really lucky to be their parent! I would have really loved to be that to him. But everything happens for a reason. Who knows? Maybe they'll be better off with you!"
Not knowing what to say, he just stands there staring at me. "If you want, there's an extra bedroom if you want to stay here. You must be really tired!" Shaking his head, he gives me a gentle smile, which is so unlike him. "I don't want to impose. I'll be here first thing in the morning." "You're not imposing, really. If I didn't want you staying here, I wouldn't have offered for you to spend the night. And if you want, grab a small bag of the essentials to spend the days until Christmas with us. It will bring you and the kids closer and it will be easier for them to adjust to a life with you."
At first, I was scared of how he will treat them. He seemed so distant and closed-off, so I thought that Christian and Calista wouldn't have the love and care that they deserve. But, that's not true. And since I can't have them, then I might as well just help them in their new life. And maybe after that, I will able to visit them from time to time. "Thank you so much! It may not seem like that, but I really appreciate everything!" Nodding my head, I gesture to the door at the end of the hallway. "That door over there leads to your bedroom. This door-" I say motioning to the door on my left, "leads to my room. If you need anything, don't be shy. Goodnight!" As I'm about to head to my room, Alexius steps closer to me, so close that if I move an inch we will be kissing.
"I don't have a clue what you're doing to me. I can't help myself when I'm around you! I tried to refrain from making a move but I may just give in. I hope that you won't kick me out after this!" "Wha-" And then I feel his lips on mine.
