Sapnap didn't come down that morning. In fact, he had yelled at Dream when he went to get him. He didn't tell George what he said, but it must've been something hurtful if he immediately dragged them out of the house.
And that was why they were sitting in his truck, in sweatpants and jackets, in hot Florida weather. It was humid- like always, and it made the heat stick to your skin and lungs and make it almost unbearable to be outside.
"Dream... maybe we should go home," George said, relishing the cold air conditioning of the truck.
"No. Nick needs space," He said. "Besides, it'll be nice to spend some one on one time. I did that with him the day before you got here."
"We walk together," George offered. "That's one on one."
"Well.... I guess," Dream pushed his keys forward, starting the engine. "But we never talk during those."
"Mm. Yeah. We could."
"That's not the point of them," He shook his head. "You were going alone, so you probably feel the same when I say the walks should stay the way they are."
"I do," George nodded. "I use then to clear my head. Get my thoughts, er, straight, I guess."
"I know what you mean," Dream sighed, and he looked tired- not the 'I slept for an hour', the 'I'm sick of life' type of tired. "My head is always.... jumbled."
"My thoughts aren't ever in order. I think what you're experiencing is normal," George said.
"Or maybe we're both just messed up," Dream laughed. "Well, at least I have someone to be messed up with."
"Tsh," George rolled his eyes, wondering why his heart had felt like it was being smothered.
They drove for what felt like hours, in reality only half of one, arriving in a mostly empty parking lot, a faint mist of rain showering the car. Dream parked and turned off the truck, and it was silent.
He ran his hands through his hair and leaned back. "You must know by now Bad leaving isn't the reason Nick needs space."
"I also know that you probably won't tell me why he does," George answered after a moment.
"Yep," Dream sighed for a second time, and opened his door.
George had never been to a Big Lots, whatever it was. He still wasn't clear what it was when they got inside, either. They had furniture, bathroom, office, and kitchen supplies, dry and frozen food, electronics, and even pet supplies.
"What do we need here?" George asked. "That's a stupid question, though, because anything we could need would be here."
"You don't ever just... go to a store?" Dream raised an eyebrow.
"No, there's no reason to," George shrugged. "Not very good time management."
"Well, yeah, but going to stores like this is fun. Sometimes you'll find something you want and never knew," He said.
"Like what? An electronic fireplace?" George scoffed. "You don't need anything here except toilet paper."
"I said want, not need," Dream smiled, and pulled a can of halved peaches off the shelf next to him.
"Those are in heavy syrup," George remarked.
"It's fruit, it doesn't count," He said.
"That's.... not-"
