Will groaned leaning back onto the tree. They were at the annual gathering and he had had to demonstrate one of the training activities. One that tended to involve muscle wrenching exercises.
He opened his eyes as he sensed movement from behind him he groaned again hauling himself up from his seat. He turned to face Crowley who stood with a disappointed look on his face he always tried to get the better of the other rangers
"Crowley." he greeted the commandant
"What do you want." Crowley raised an eyebrow
"I'm not aloud a friendly visit?" he asked. Will shook his head
"No your paperwork doesn't let you." he said cheerfully Crowley's face took on a look of disgust
"Yes the paperwork you wouldn't think about helping with that would you?" he asked although he knew the answer
"You're right I wouldn't consider it." Crowley sighed resignedly
"Well you're right I actually have a mission for you."
He held up a hand to prevent the torrent of questions from the eager ranger it didn't help.
"what's the mission? where am i going? when will i leave? is it just me?" He asked a voice behind him sighed sending will nearly a foot into the air
"Can you ever just ask one question or even better just wait and listen" Will grinned at halt as he turned a triumphant light in his eyes.
"see Crowley i managed to get him and you didn't!" he said to his friend.
Crowley pouted.
"Unfair he was distracted."
Halt raised an eyebrow.
"So his a ranger he still should have heard me but he didn't which means i'm better"
Will shuffled his feet getting the underlying message you should have heard me don't let yourself get distracted it could mean your death. a ranger should always have his guard up even if he thinks its safe.
"Yes halt." He said meekly head down halt waved a dismissive hand.
"So what is the mission."
He looked at his friend who still looked like a 4 year old whos mother had taken his favorite toy. He glanced at the coffeepot Will obliged taking the hint and moved to pour some. Crowley started as they had all settled.
"So it should be a rather simple matter the treaty in Scandia is due for renewal and since it changes location every time it is coincidently in Scandia the time round. I'd like you and Horace who is now a member of the royal family who has the authority to redo it to go and sort it out."
The two listening men nodded it sounded simple although will didn't exactly view it enjoyably sensing his discomfort Crowley continued.
"Sorry to put this on you Will I know you had a rough time there but there is also the few who don't like the treaty and what it means for their raiding that's why Horace will go instead of his wife and Duncan. I figure with 2 of the figures who helped save their country they might settle down."
Will nodded his understanding.
"Right so when do we leave."
"You can ride back with me to Araluen tomorrow where a Wolfship will take you and Horace to Scandia."
"Be a pity if they ended up in the Sonderlands" halt said sarcastically Crowley turned a baleful eye on him.
"Just because you don't see the need to say certain things doesn't mean i have to" he told his friends halt glared at him.
"I say what needs to be said."
"And that just had to be said didn't it."
"Yes."
"You're insufferable."
"you're" he didn't get any further will thought it might be time to interrupt the men's bickering
"I'll be ready to go" crowley turned to him grateful he figured whatever halt had been about to say it wouldn't have been a compliment. "right i better be back see if i can lure a few rangers into helping with the paperwork"
"actually i think i know how to do that" he said casually although the crafty glean in his eyes belied him crowley turned to him eagerly "how?"
"follow" will said he looked at halt and grinned "you should watch i think this is gonna get rather interested halt raised his signature eyebrow "oh really and how do you suggest to get 47 of the most paperwork haters in Araluen to do this"
"watch" will said his curiosity piqued crowley started forward eager to be rid of his work load!
in the command tent will grabbed the giant stack of papers on crowleys' desk whistling to himself greybeard halt as he did so crowley followed looking like a lost puppy. will turned to him and raised an eyebrow "so if we go to where a lot of the apprentices are with their mentors in the main group i think i know how to get them doing this lot" he indicated the stack of papers "i need you to stay out of sight whatever you do because i have no desire to have half a hundred longbows aimed at me" crowley stared at him so he' elaborated "ever heard of a white lie' will hinted and crowley grinned even more he chuckled "good luck will i hope this works but if it doesn't we'll blame it on halt we can say he threatened to take all of your coffee if you didn't do it" will raised an eyebrow "are you saying i can't lie!" he demanded crowley shook his head "no i know you learnt from the best" he smirked and will glared at him "do you want this or not crowley gestured "go right ahead"
