People often look at royalty with eyes of envy. They have an abundance of food, little to no physically demanding tasks, and safety from the world full of danger.
A young prince however, looked over his citizens with jealousy. Their lives didn't revolve around control and power. The majority had loving families and could make friends with anyone they saw fit. They didn't have the crushing weight of all the people their family killed to "keep the peace" in the land.
"Are the rumors true?" Killua heard a guard whisper to his friend as they passed his door.
"Sato saw them after he left his night shift this morning. One of them really is a young boy." The other guard replied.
"How young?"
"I heard just twelve years old."
"That's as young as prince Killua. What is her majesty thinking?"
Killua's heart jumped. A knight around his age? And a boy?! That was rare. The majority of the castles servants were older except for Canary. Even then his mother had forbade her from seeing him back when he tried to be friends with her. It had been almost four years since he had seen her. His family kept him away from anyone who they thought he would be friends with, it would take away from his preparation to become the next king, according to them at least.
Killua jumped out of his bed he had been laying on and quietly made his way to the door. He took a deep breath and pushed away any hesitation. He gently opened the door and glanced down the hallway to make sure no one would see him. It had been a few years since he had tried to sneak out, and they never ended well.
He quickly walked down the hall his steps not making a sound. He pressed himself into the shadows the new morning sun made through the windows. He took deep controlled breaths to keep his heart on track and his mind free from anxiety. Guards often walked down the hallways he crept down making sure the royal family was safe, but Killua always found a small hiding space that would hold just long enough for them to walk by. Eventually Killua made his way to the castle door that led outside. He pushed it open and let his heart race as his eyes met the outside world. His pale skin socked in the sun as his crystal blue eyes scanned the green forest that surrounded the place he was forced to call home. Killua shook his head in an effort to focus himself on his goal. He quietly made his way into the forest and tried to remember which way the knights shacks were.
"I could have sworn they were over here." Killua thought out loud to himself.
He continued to push his way through the knotted woods pushing leaves and low hanging branches out of his way as quietly as he could.
"Are you sure this was a good idea?" He heard a voice ask.
Killua ducked down low and quieted his breath. His heart couldn't help but rush a little at the thought of having a new friend. The voice didn't sound all that young though. Killua inched his way closer to where he heard the voice.
"I'm not so sure either." An even older voice replied.
"Oh come on we worked so hard to get here! It'll be fun!" A young boy shouted.
Killua's heart leaned forward to the young joyful voice. Killua got on his hands and knees and hid behind a bush separating him from the knights. He carefully parted the leaves and saw three knights standing around each other talking. One knight was over six feet tall with small glasses and dark hair. His beginner knight clothes looked almost too little for him. The second knight had a very feminine look to him. He had a fragile looking body with a pretty sculpted face and short cut blonde hair. The young voice looked like it came from the third knight. He was a short young boy with spiky dark green hair and bright brown eyes. His smile was wide and confident and his aura was filled with pure joy and a sense of adventure.
Killua's heart skipped as his eyes met the third knight. For the first time in years he let his guard down and became lost in his sight. His cheeks reddened as his heart rate got quicker and quicker. Without paying attention his hand slipped a little and broke a branch on the bush making a sound. The three knights immediately turned around to see what happened.
"What was that?" The second guard questioned harshly.
Killua was so lost in the moment his mind didn't even process it was him who had made the sound til it was too late. The third guard looked down at Killua and their eyes met. Time seemed to stop for a moment as they studied each other's eyes. The knights face lit up even more then before as he turn to the other two.
"Hey guys look!" He exclaimed.
The other two knights looked down at the young prince and the tension in their face softened.
"Oh, it's just a kid." The first knight said relieved.
"Hey! What's your name?" The third knight exclaimed.
They didn't seem to know he was the young prince. Killua crawled out from his hiding spot and stood in front of the three of them. He glanced at the third knight and tried to hid his glowing cheeks, which seemed to work out seeing as no one said anything.
"Killua." He replied plainly his eyes somewhere between the second and third knight.
"I'm Gon!" The third knight exclaimed happily. He turned and pointed to the second knight. "This is Kurapika! And this is Leorio!" Gon explained pointing to the first knight.
"We're new knights at the estate. Why are you here?" Leorio asked.
Killua's mind rushed for a good answer that wasn't the real reason. His minds eyes scanned his thoughts for anything that made sense.
"I come here from time to time to meet the knights is all. M-my dad used to work here so-" Killua explained off the top of his head. He scolded himself for not thinking of something better in the moment.
"Wow! You're dad is a knight? That's so cool, mine is too!" Gon exclaimed jumping up and down getting close to Killua.
Killua furiously tried to keep himself calm as Gon happily got closer and closer to him.
"We came here in hopes to find him actually. You wouldn't happen to know a knight by the name of Ging working here do you?" Kurapika asked.
Killua's heart saddened with the realization. "No, I'm sorry, not that I know of." Killua answered his voice soft and sad. He quickly looked to see Gon's reaction to the news.
Gon's eyes showed he was disappointed, but his smile didn't go away. He took a deep breath and his eyes change from disappointment to confidence.
"Well, we'll see this job through and quite as soon as we can so we can keep looking!" Gon exclaimed.
"I can't believe we agreed to go with him." Leorio complained.
"It was your idea!" Kurapika snapped laughing.
Killua's eyes shined as he was taken aback by his reaction to such news. He opened his mouth to say something else until he saw other guards approaching. He rushed back into the bush and brushed the leaves back into place.
"Wait Killua?" Gon said confused.
"Sorry I have to go." Killua hissed back.
Gon's face looked slightly sad. Killua's heart wavered.
"I'll meet you at the back door of the castle tonight so we can talk." Killua added quickly.
Gon's face lit back up again like a puppy and he nodded. "See you then, Killua." Gon added.
Killua smiled to himself as he ran back to the castle and safely made it back in his room before anyone knew.
