"We've got a problem." I informed my best friend Charlie as I let him through my apartment door.
"And what would that be, lovely?" He joked.
"You might wanna sit down, it's a long story." I told him. He obeyed. First, a little backstory about my life. I live by myself in an apartment in Los Angeles, which is far from where my parents live, in Minnesota. My best friend was Charlie, who I'd known for years. I had a massive crush on him, but he never seemed to feel the same. I grew up in a household where my older sister, Beverly, was favored and loved much more by my parents. Every month my parents sent me letters, most of them usually about how I need a job, a boyfriend, etc. Judgemental things mostly.
"So you know how my parents hate me, right?" I asked, returning my thoughts to Charlie.
"They dont hate you."
I gave him a "dont interrupt me" look.
"Tell that to them, I've always been their least favorite compared to Bev." I said, referring to my older sister. "Well the point is, is that this monthly letter of theirs was once again, all about how I need a man in my life."
He nodded to show he was following.
"And well, I got so sick of if that I may or may not have written back and told them I have a boyfriend....named Charlie." I blurted.
"You told them I was your boyfriend?" He asked.
"Wellll. Not necessarily you, just a guy named Charlie. He's made up."
He chuckled.
"Well anyways, they got so happy that they told me to come visit for Christmas this year, and to bring my boyfriend. And.."
"And?"
"I said yes because they've never invited me before and I want them to like me, so I was wondering if you might wanna pretend to be my boyfriend so they believe it?" I spit out.
"Calm down, I'd be honored to be your pretend boyfriend." He winked at me. My heart fluttered.
"Ok cool, um. I'll help you pack?"
"When are we leaving?"
"Tomorrow morning."
His eyes grew wide.
"Well we better get to it. You coming girlfriend?" He teased, offering me his hand.

I yawned as Charlie and I walked up to my parents doorstep. It'd been a busy night."Y/n! Hello!" My dad greeted me. "You must be Charlie."
Charlie shook his hand. "Nice to meet you sir."
"My daughter driven you insane yet?" My dad asked, and I rolled my eyes. Charlie grabbed my hand and squeezed it.
"How would that be possible? She's perfect."
I blushed.
"Honey! Y/n and Charlie are here!" My dad yelled, ignoring Charlie's comment.
"Oh she actually came!" My mom showed up at the doorstep next to my dad. "Wont you come in?"
Charlie didnt let go of my hand as we walked in.
"You and Charlie will be sharing your old room upstairs y/n, because Beverly and her husband have the other room." I nodded. Charlie and I made our way upstairs.
"I didnt know your sister's married." Charlie said as soon as I'd shut the door.
"Yep. I wasn't invited to the wedding."
He scoffed. "What a loving family."
I snorted and nodded.
"Don't worry, as long as I'm your boyfriend, I wont let them talk you down." He said, walking over to me.
"You know you're not actually my boyfriend, right?"
He laced our fingers together.
"I know." He whispered, his eyes flickering from my eyes to my lips. Maybe this wasn't such a bad idea afterall.
