'Edge of Great'

The sound of Luke's pen scratching against the pages of his journal and Reggie strumming on his bass filled the otherwise silent studio. There hadn't been much talking since Beverly and Alex had left, which had been about an hour ago, with the exception of a few jokes from either party every now and then.

As they sat in silence, a swoosh! sounded near the door. Reggie leapt up from the couch, both he and Luke looked to the source of the sound, the former looking rather disappointed when he saw their drummer standing unaccompanied.

"Where's Bev?" He asked, scanning the room and seeing no sign of her.

"She's . . . thinking," he waved them off. "She'll be here soon."

Reggie mumbled a few incoherent words, Luke and Alex exchanged a look and shook their heads, watching as he took his seat back on the leather seats. Alex sighed and sat beside him, his drumsticks spinning between his fingers out of boredom.

Reggie leaned back and pulled on the strings of his bass, occasional sighs escaped his lips as Alex tapped his drumsticks against his right leg and Luke strummed on his guitar.

"Look, we add the echoes during the chorus, then when Julie comes in with the melody, it's gonna sound perfect," Luke raved, pointing to the open page in his journal.

Their heads snapped over to the doors when they heard a thud, their gazes met by that of Willie's wide-eyed expression. Their faces contorted in confusion, why he'd been going out of his way to see them only to run away once he was spotted, they had no idea.

"Again? What's all that about?" Reggie stared at the spot Willie had just ducked out of sight.

"I don't know," Alex shrunk a little in his seat.

"Maybe you should go after him," Luke turned to the drummer.

His hesitation was clear at first, but after a few seconds, he nodded and poofed out, just barely catching Willie as he left.

Inside, Reggie turned to Luke with a smirk, "He's whipped."

Luke scoffed, "You're not really in any position to talk, Reg. You've been hung up on your best friend's sister since 1993."

"Wh-What?" Reggie squeaked, scolding himself for lying so obviously.

He rolled his eyes, "Do us all a favor and ask her out. I don't think I can take anymore of this."

He received nothing but silence from Reggie, whose face had flushed heavily, earning a soft snicker from Luke. The silence was once again broken by Alex, who looked none too pleased.

He cleared his throat, "Let's practice."

They'd practiced for no longer than thirty minutes before Alex seemed to go off script, his playing growing aggressive. There was a brief exchange between the boys, their playing slowing to a halt as they watched him continue, before he too stopped playing.
