Just like before, 5 minutes before I had to walk out into the field, I settled next to the opening. I leaned against the wall, flexing my muscles slightly to get warmed up.
Yamada called my name and I stepped into the light. Multiple people booed me, calling me names and the like, but I ignored them.
Todoroki walked into the field, his eyes catching his father's for a moment before turning away. I glared at Endeavor, making sure he saw I was still angry with him.
As soon as the words left Yamada's mouth for us to start, Todoroki stomped his foot on the ground and sent a blast of ice in my direction. I jumped out of the way quickly. I noticed how Todoroki's body moved to face me wherever I ran, making sure to keep me in front of him.
"So, tell me, Todoroki, why don't you use your fire?" I yelled out, trying to get him to cool down on the persistent ice walls.
"None of your business," He growled, staying focused.
"It's your father isn't it, an act of rebellion against him. I understand that, but do you know how powerful you would be if you gave in?"
"Did he set you up to this? My father?" He said, his teeth clenched. I laughed at this, risking a glance towards Endeavor who was leaning over the side of the railing, his eyes glued to us.
"I told your father he was a flaming piece of shit, and that he should be in jail for child abuse a mere 10 minutes ago. I think it's safe to say he didn't set any of this up," I smile, catching Todoroki by surprise. His attacks stalled as he processed my information.
"I promised I wouldn't use his quirk. I would only use my mothers!" He yelled.
"But it's not his quirk. Sure you might have gotten it from him, but it matters how you use it! No quirk is useless, villainous, or heroic if you use it correctly! You don't have to be an asshole just because you decided to use your fire! Be better than him, but don't limit the power you have!" I yelled, watching with delight as he stood there, taking in my words.
The crowd was yelling again, screaming for us to fight, to do something, but I ignored them.
"It's your quirk, Todoroki! Not his! Make that quirk your own!" I screamed, only to take a step back as his entire left side bust into flames, his clothes burning away slightly. I watched as the slowly crawling frostbite was melted away, practically rebirthing him like a damn phoenix.
A blast of fire shot at me, burning my clothes and leaving a foul smell in the air. He now had two long-distance attacks, and my main form of fighting was close distance. I needed to get into his bubble somehow, make it so he couldn't use his quirks effectively.
I got the outcome that I wanted, Totoroki's firepower being unleashed, but now I had to survive long enough to make my defeat look like a struggle. I kept on my feet, having to doge both fire and ice now.
Todoroki thrust his arm out when I got too close, flames licking my body and searing my chest. My skin bubbled and broke, the burns growing to capture my entire chest. I glanced down at it, feeling the light pain and the major uncomfortableness of the injury before continuing to fight.
I caught Todoroki off guard with my quick recovery, his eyes lingering on my open chest that was now covered in burns. I grabbed his arm and twisted it behind his back, sticking my foot into the back of his knees and dropping him to the ground, pinning him to the dirt.
Todoroki froze for a second before the arm I had pinned behind his back started to heat up as flames danced in his palm, trying to get me to back off without burning me. I pushed his arm higher up on his back, making him grunt in pain. I leaned down next to his head and whispered quietly to him.
"When I let go I want you to jump up, pushing me off of you, and throw me out of the ring as fast as you can, got it?" I asked, watching as his eyes went from anger to confusion to understanding. He nodded slightly and got ready, his body tense under mine.
My grip on him slackened enough for him to feel and he pushed me off of him and jumped to his feet. I landed hard on my back, taking longer than I usually would have to get up. Todoroki stomped his foot on the ground and a large block of ice encased me. I couldn't move anything, I was completely trapped.
While this wasn't exactly what I wanted to happen, it worked. Yamada called Todoroki the winner, and he melted the ice from around me.
"Are you ok?" He asked, concern flashing on his face as his eyes met the burns. We walked off the field together, headed towards Recovery Girl's office so I could be healed up. Even if the pain doesn't phase me, having a burn this big would hinder my ability to fight when my Master attacks the festival.
"I'm fine, I've had worse," I shrugged him off.
"Why did you do that? Help me with my quirk then let me win?"
"I didn't want to compete anymore, but I had one goal for this match, make you use your fire powers, and I think I accomplished that goal pretty well," I smiled.
"Why did me using my quirk matter so much, especially considering you don't use your own?" I sighed, not liking the fact that this was the third time today that I came out as quirkless to someone.
"Because I don't have one, and seeing you half-ass your powers when you could be unstoppable with them felt wasteful," I explained.
"I understand, and I apologize," Todoroki said, seemingly not phased by my reveal.
"You're not surprised? Most people are shocked when I tell them I'm quirkless,"
"I figured there was something about your quirk, and one of the ideas I had was that you were quirkless, but I didn't really have any evidence other than you refusing to use it," He explained plainly, his monotoned voice never wavering.
He opened the door for me and I walked through. Recovery Girl took one look at me before ushering me to a bed.
"You boys and getting hurt!" She huffed, kissing the skin lightly, making the area tingle. A shiver ran up my spine at the feeling and I uncomfortably shifted in the bed.
The burns started to heal and close up, and I felt my energy drain away. I let my eyes drift close, but I could still hear Recovery Girl talking to Todoroki.
"You may leave now, get ready for your next match," She shooed.
"Will he be ok?" Todoroki asked quietly.
"He needs a lot of rest, more so than you think, now don't disturb him!" She ordered, referencing the major fight happening after everyone leaves. That was all the encouragement I needed to drift to sleep in an attempt to be ready for my Master.
