Christmas Fic!
Warnings: Mild angst, awkwardness, fluff, Fili is a sweetheart
There was no doubt about it, you were avoiding people more and more as Yuletide approached. Fili didn't quite understand it, the first time you'd shrugged him off, he hadn't thought much of it, but as he noticed you do it to others, all mentioning certain things about the upcoming celebration, you were quick to get yourself away.
"Have you noticed it?" Fili asked Kili one afternoon, both of them trudging back to the mountain through the snow. "It seems to out of character."
Kili shrugs. "Maybe Y/N doesn't like this time of year, it's not like that's unheard of for some people."
"Then why not talk about it?" Fili said, frowning. "We're all friends."
"Could be anything Fili," Kili said earnestly. "I wouldn't take it personally. You know as well as I do, that Y/N will talk when ready."
Fili sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. "I don't know Kili, this has me worried."
The conversation with his brother only had Fili more than a little determined to track you down and find out what was happening, his resolve only growing when Dis told him that you weren't going to go to the ball.
"Why not?" He asked a little harshly. "That doesn't make any sense, everyone goes to the ball."
Dis expression is understanding. "I do know the reason, but that's not for me to tell you. Y/N told me in confidence so I'm going to keep it that way. If you wish to ask, then you may do so, but I would suggest being a little more polite about it."
Fili sighs and nods, and he was so uncomfortable at this point, an uneasy feeling in his stomach, that he went to go and find you.
"Y/N?" Fili found you in one of the halls, quite by chance. "Is everything okay?"
You look at Fili a little nervously. "Of course, why wouldn't it be?"
He lets out a slow breath, calming himself. "Mum mentioned that you won't be going to the ball."
"Oh," You look away from him. "I...I don't like big celebrations, you know that."
"I do, but it's never stopped you going before," He said gently, wanting to take a step closer, but currently avoiding it. "And I...I know you've been avoiding others when they discuss the celebrations."
You sigh softly. "I...I've never had much luck this time of year Fi...I don't like to talk about it. Dis already managed it but...I-I don't know if I can talk about it again."
Fili takes a careful step forward and takes your hand in his. "It's me Y/N. You know you can tell me anything. I only want to help."
Looking away shyly, a shudder goes through you. "I...I know. This has never...really been a good time for me. I've never really gotten to celebrate it the way that I...I wanted to or...or with those I care about. This time of year just makes me sad Fili, and I don't want to bring others down with me."
A gentle hand moves under your chin and brings your gaze back to his. "Will you let me change that for you?"
He didn't need to think about such an offer, he wanted to do everything he could for you, and he wanted you to feel comfortable.
"Fili..." Your voice was soft, and you averted your eyes. "You don't have to do that for me. I'm fine."
"I want to." He said. "I want to share this with you."
Slowly, your gaze came back to meet his, but in that moment, the two of you were interrupted.
"There you are," Dwalin growled, coming down the hall, you quickly taking a step back from Fili. "We've been looking for you all over the place. Thorin wants to see you."
