*Keefe*
I'm minding my own business when Tam comes over and taps my shoulder.
"What is it?" I ask with half baked annoyance.
"I thought that you, Mr. Manager, would like to know that your girl is here." Tam smirks.
"Sophie?"
"Yes Sophie. Who else would I be talking about?"
I get up and do a quick happy dance before heading over to the table that Sophie is sitting at. But not before I see Tam face-palm.
"Hi there Miss Foster," I slide into the empty seat adjacent to her.
"Hello Mr. Sencen," she replies.
She has bags under her eyes, and I wonder what could possibly be keeping her up. This life is so different than the one we had in the Lost Cities. I'm honestly dying of boredom most day.
"You okay?" I ask her gently
Maybe her mind is replaying the darker moments of the battle against the Neverseen.
Maybe she lives with the guilt of wishing she could do more.
I know I do sometimes.
Be present, my inner voice reminds me. We cant change the past much as we want to.
"Sophie?"
*Sophie*
Keefe looks at me with such concern it melts my heart.
He's such a caring person.
"Are you asking because of these?" I point to the bags under my eyes.
He nods.
"I just quit my job as a dog walker because it was too much, and now I don't know what to do."
"Why don't you work here?" I suggest.
"How do you know they'll take me even?" I voice my doubts.
"As the manager I'll put in a good word for you." Keefe elbows me playfully. He then excuses himself.
It would be great to work alongside Keefe. Maybe one of these days I'll get the courage to tell him that I like him.
"Great news," Keefe returns with a wide smile, "I talked to my higher ups and they're willing to take you. They said they are looking to expand and so another worker would be great."
"Thank you, thank you," I give Keefe a hug out of sheer appreciation
"No problem," he says
Then he takes my hand and leads me to the counter. "Welcome to ExPresso shots." Keefe puts a green apron over my head.
I got a job! And I have a good feeling about it.
